Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Along with the 1986, the 1982 is one of the greatest Talbots ever made. Far more evolved than its stablemate, Gruaud Larose, it exhibits a dense garnet color to the rim along with a huge, sweet, exotic nose of charcoal, beef blood, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. A hint of figs suggests borderline overripeness, but the wine remains fleshy and full-bodied with sweet tannin and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. While fully mature, it should hold for another decade. Release price

Christer Byklum: Bright ruby, thin brick rim. In neck fill, 0.5 cm below cork. Dates, figs, some cedar, tobacco, detailed and nuanced, lovely maturity, lighter but very elegant nose, refined, fine leather, cigars and cigar box. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, detailed, fruit driven, some spices, juicy, leaner bodied, sweet dates and figs, tobacco, lighter bodied, very refined, easy to overlook, long finish. From my father's cellar, bought upon release and never moved. Lovely and classic and utterly charming.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Fully mature, with a nose of tobacco, cigar box, cassis, figs and a hint of jam. The wine is full bodied, concentrated and feels great through the earthy, cassis and cigar wrapper finish.

The dirty nose of the start has given way to the very essence of old Bordeaux, a smoky vegetal rigour (pepper, oak moss, noble wood, tobacco) typical of Pessac, blackberry, spices, damp autumnal undergrowth. Great finesse of matter, fine grain and salinity due to age, here is a St Julien that has emerged from its austerity while dispersing its stigmata to our good memory. 42 years old and in great shape!

This wine was served alongside the Gruaud from the same stable and it really was quite difficult to pick a favourite. There were strong similarities of style: glossy, fruity, friendly, open, something almost Napa-esque about them. Sweet nose and real dancing life. The merest hint of molasses and something very slightly vegetal on the nose – not at all underripe though. Thick and rich, long, a hint of marine notes. Positively oozes charm. I defy anyone not to like this.

Château Talbot
Château Talbot

At Château Talbot, wine combines past and future. Respect for traditions and technological evolution live in perfect harmony. From the alliance of techniques, terroir and the people who passionately work the land, wines of character, harmony and complexity are born. In twenty years, it has become one of the most sought-after wines in the Bordeaux region. It is undeniable that Talbot is one of the most famous growths of the Médoc. This excellent reputation is undoubtedly due to a mysterious combination of several factors: the size of its vineyard, nearly one hundred hectares, the consistency of its wine, in the same family for nearly a century, the name Talbot - short and striking, easy to pronounce in all languages and part of our history... But what primarily makes Talbot popular is the wonderful nature of its wine. "Talbot embodies for many the ideal of Saint Julien, generously bouqueted, very stable and reliable in aging" emphasize Bettane and Desseauve in their Grand Guide des Vins de France. Indeed, Talbot is a champion of longevity, which doesn't prevent it from being pleasant and round even in its earliest youth, always marked by silky and smooth, very civilized tannins. Talbot has an extroverted nature, it is never withdrawn, and has the courtesy to be in good spirits every day. It is a refined wine, with its complex notes of havana and licorice, deliciously classic without ever being austere.
