Information on the vintage 1989 red Bordeaux : 5/5 Unquestionably a great vintage and one which brought the decade to a resounding close. Lots of exceptional wines.

All elegance and fine texture. Beautiful aromas of milk chocolate and ripe berries. Full- to medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a sweet fruit, chocolate aftertaste. Hard to resist now.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
I am an admirer of proprietor Valette, so it has given me no pleasure to write so-so reviews for recent Pavie vintages. I was pleased in this blind tasting to see how strongly both the 1989 and 1990 Pavies performed. Both slightly eclipsed my scores given immediately after bottling. The 1989 displays a deep rubygarnet colour with no signs of amber at the edge. It offers up an exotic, spicy, fruitcake, earthy, chocolatey nose with sweet woodsy aromas in the background. Long and youthful, with noticeably hard tannin, this medium-bodied, concentrated 1989 appears to be a slowly evolving wine. With another 2-3 years of bottle age, it may merit an outstanding score.

Château Pavie
Château Pavie

Château Pavie is one of the greatest growths of the Saint-Émilion appellation, elevated to the top of the appellation’s classification among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés A. Covering 37 contiguous hectares to the south-east of the village, it occupies an entire slope — an asteriated limestone plateau, clay-limestone hillside and sandy-clay foothills — where Merlot predominates, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Taken over by the Perse family in 1998, the estate produces a deep, powerful wine built for long ageing.

Its vintages span two eras: the great classics from before the takeover, such as the 1990, sit alongside the highlights of the Perse era — the 2000 vintage, the 2009 wine and the 2020 —, while the second wine, Arômes de Pavie, offers an initial introduction to the house style.
