Tasted during an offline lunch at Ledbury. Interesting to taste after many years. It has a rather angular nose with macerated black cherries, blueberry, mushroom, a little thyme and a notable lift conferred by a touch of VA. The palate is medium-bodied with coarse and rustic tannins, notes of dried blood, thyme, melted tar and graphite, although the finish is rather lean and overtly leafy, too dry for my taste. Drink now. Tasted in October 2009.

Château Pavie is one of the greatest growths of the Saint-Émilion appellation, elevated to the top of the appellation’s classification among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés A. Covering 37 contiguous hectares to the south-east of the village, it occupies an entire slope — an asteriated limestone plateau, clay-limestone hillside and sandy-clay foothills — where Merlot predominates, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Taken over by the Perse family in 1998, the estate produces a deep, powerful wine built for long ageing.

Its vintages span two eras: the great classics from before the takeover, such as the 1990, sit alongside the highlights of the Perse era — the 2000 vintage, the 2009 wine and the 2020 —, while the second wine, Arômes de Pavie, offers an initial introduction to the house style.
