expert's opinions

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
This wine stands out as a sensational effort just a few years away from full maturity. A 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine displays loads of scorched earth and smoky barbecue scents along with blueberry, black raspberry and black currant. The wine is expansive, has a savory, broad palate and a full-bodied mouthfeel, yet possesses vivid purity and uplift. The tannins are still present, but they are sweet and well-integrated. This wine should hit full maturity in another year or two and last for at least 20 more years.

Jean-Marc Quarin September - 2018
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark, intense, young and beautiful colour. Superb intense, fine nose, with ripe, fresh and subtle fruit. Nuances of violet and menthol. Delicate on the attack, particularly fruity and delicious in the mid-palate, the wine displays a refined touch. It melts on the palate and finishes nobly in its texture and grain. Impossible to spit out.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Youthful, but continuing to develop well, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and lush, with layers of dark black and deep red fruits, smoke, wet earth, mocha, and tobacco. There is length, and depth, with a long, lushly-textured finish. Drink from 2022-2040.

Jancis Robinson March - 2010

Dark and still quite purple. Not much nose actually – just a vague whiff of manure, strangely! But on the palate, very gentle and well balanced, even if there is a suggestion of toast and oak on the finish. This does not seem to be one of Pape Clément's most successful modern vintages... but as always it delivers. Perfect first class airline wine...?

Château Pape Clement

Château Pape Clément is one of the major historic estates of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Its history begins at the end of the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, future Pope Clement V, bequeathed his vineyard to the Archbishopric of Bordeaux. This direct link to the papacy confers upon the estate a unique patrimonial depth, making Château Pape Clément one of the oldest growths in Bordeaux still in operation.

Classified as Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the official 1953 classification (revised in 1959), Château Pape Clément has established itself as an essential reference among the great wines of Pessac-Léognan, both in red and white. The vineyard, located at the gates of Bordeaux, rests on deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand, fostering a refined and complex expression of Bordeaux grape varieties.

The grape variety is predominantly based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, whilst the whites rely on Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The wines of Château Pape Clément are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, their silky texture and their balance between power and elegance.

Renowned for their great ageing potential, the estate's wines traverse the decades with ease. Iconic vintages such as Pape Clément 2005, Pape Clément 2001, Pape Clément 1998, Pape Clément 2000, Pape Clément blanc 2012, Pape Clément 2010 or Pape Clément 2003 illustrate the qualitative consistency and the singular position of Château Pape Clément among the great collectible wines of Bordeaux.
