Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1990 La Landonne is a perfect wine! Fortunately, more than 800 cases were produced. It possesses an opaque black colour, and a huge, truffle, liquorice, cassis, and peppery-scented nose. While it is one of the most concentrated wines I have ever poured across my palate, it is perfectly balanced, with adequate underlying acidity, huge extraction of ripe fruit and tannin, and a phenomenal 70-second or longer finish. This is the essence of Syrah!

Holy Moly! This thrilling wine has it all. While there is some tannin to resolve, and you get the feeling there is still something held in reserve, what you do find is off the charts! Intense, dense, powerful, regal, fresh, balanced and lively, the smoky essence, crushed rock, sweet plum, cherry, thyme, and pepper is more than ample to keep you busy. But the wealth of fruit, power and opulence on the palate is the real magic! The 60 second finish awards you time to enjoy the layers of pure, dark red fruits, cocoa, kirsch, pepper and spice.

Intense and still oaky wine with the sort of vanilla sweetness one associates with American oak (though I'm sure Guigal uses only French). For the moment the tannins are so rough that there's a certain rusticity about this wine. If you have some, don't open it for a while.

Domaine Guigal
Domaine Guigal

The Domaine E. Guigal has established itself as one of the absolute references of the Rhône Valley, both northern and southern. Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the family estate has built its reputation on an exacting interpretation of terroirs and a constant pursuit of excellence. Today led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the domaine embodies a heritage vision of great wine, recognised on an international scale.

Historically established in Ampuis, Maison Guigal vinifies and ages in its cellars the entire range of great northern Rhône appellations, including Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. This same site also ensures the ageing of emblematic southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, guaranteeing perfect control of the ageing process and a coherent stylistic identity.

Closely associated with Côte-Rôtie, where it produces some of the most emblematic cuvées of the Rhône, Domaine E. Guigal distinguishes itself through wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Vintages that have become references, such as Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 1985, Guigal La Landonne 1990, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Hermitage Ex-Voto 2003, Guigal La Mouline 1999, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2010, Guigal La Mouline 2018 testify to the quality consistency and exceptional ageing potential of the estate.
