Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
I have given perfect scores to other vintages of La Landonne, but the black-purple-coloured 1999 Cote Rotie La Landonne may be the finest effort Guigal has ever coaxed out of this vineyard. It appears less animalistic than usual, offering gorgeously pure notes of incense, melted road tar, fried bacon, blackberries, blueberries, smoked meats, and vanilla. Literally out of this world in terms of flavour concentration and balance, the finish lasts well over 60 seconds. What is so remarkable about this cuvee is its tremendous layers of flavour, awesome texture, and perfect balance. This is an astonishing offering from one of the world's greatest winemakers.

Fresh black cherry liqueur, smoke, liquorice, truffle, black pepper, forest floor and mint aromatics create the intoxicating nose. Intense, full bodied, concentrated and deep, this is all balanced out with its refinement, harmony and seemingly endless length. Youthful, yet a treat to drink with a few hours of air.

Dark and still a touch tight, with a wall of bacony, mesquite-tinged toast holding the core of blackberry and fig fruit at bay. Lush, exotic fruit pushes through on the finish, with notes of musk, aged tobacco, roasted vanilla and hoisin sauce. The dark, toasty finish still needs more time to unwind fully. There's no Viognier, and, except for the 2002 vintage, this is never destemmed.

Deep purple. These last three reds were served in the reverse order and gave us a lesson in the increasing concentration and oak influence of the wines over time. This was the most focussed. Deep purple. Extremely fresh and dense and energetic yet velvety. Some liquorice. Dramatic but a bit drying on the finish.

Domaine Guigal
Domaine Guigal

The Domaine E. Guigal stands as one of the absolute references of the Rhône Valley, both northern and southern. Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, this family estate has built its reputation on a demanding interpretation of terroirs and a constant pursuit of excellence. Today led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the estate embodies a heritage vision of great wine, recognised internationally.

Historically established in Ampuis, Maison Guigal vinifies and ages in its cellars all the great northern Rhône appellations, including Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. This same site also ensures the ageing of emblematic southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, guaranteeing perfect control of ageing and a coherent stylistic identity.

Closely associated with Côte-Rôtie, where it produces some of the Rhône's most emblematic cuvées, Domaine E. Guigal is distinguished by wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Vintages that have become references, such as Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 1985, Guigal La Landonne 1990, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Hermitage Ex-Voto 2003, Guigal La Mouline 1999, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2010, Guigal La Mouline 2018 testify to the estate's consistent quality and exceptional ageing potential.
