expert's opinions

Dark in color, the wine opens with spicy, sharp red fruits, smoke, herbs, and an oceanic influence on the nose. It takes just the first sip to grasp the greatness of this wine. Full-bodied, powerful, intense, balanced, and lively on the palate, you feel the weight while sensing the energy as its layers of fruit coat your palate and linger. The wine captivates your attention for over 60 seconds. This is clearly a wow vintage for Guigal La Turque. The wine blends 7% Viognier along with 93% Syrah.

Shows beautiful freshness, despite its age, weight and power, with redcurrant, mulled blackberry and floral notes floating atop earthy singed tobacco and toasty cedar elements. Just hitting its stride, matching exotic spices with smoke, minerality and a pleasingly dense texture. The lengthy finish reveals baker's chocolate and toasted herbs. Excellent.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Shut down tight on this occasion, the dark, impenetrable 2018 Cote Rotie La Turque is clearly dense and packed with potential. Cedary notes, dark, concentrated fruit, potent tannins and a long, dusty finish suggest plenty of upside for the patient.

Christer Byklum: Ruby. Served blind. Dark fruits, anise, spices, liquorice, richer nose, nuanced. Some eucalyptus. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, dark fruits, firmer, long finish.

Cask sample. A touch more beefy than the La Mouline, yet with the same withheld fruit, which needs much more time to evolve. Has the delicacy of Côte Rôtie, and we must be patient for the complexity.

Domaine Guigal
Domaine Guigal

The Domaine E. Guigal has established itself as one of the absolute references of the Rhône Valley, both northern and southern. Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the family estate has built its reputation on an exacting interpretation of terroirs and a constant pursuit of excellence. Today led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the domaine embodies a heritage vision of great wine, recognised on an international scale.

Historically established in Ampuis, Maison Guigal vinifies and ages in its cellars the entire range of great northern Rhône appellations, including Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. This same site also ensures the ageing of emblematic southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, guaranteeing perfect control of the ageing process and a coherent stylistic identity.

Closely associated with Côte-Rôtie, where it produces some of the most emblematic cuvées of the Rhône, Domaine E. Guigal distinguishes itself through wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Vintages that have become references, such as Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 1985, Guigal La Landonne 1990, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Hermitage Ex-Voto 2003, Guigal La Mouline 1999, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2010, Guigal La Mouline 2018 testify to the quality consistency and exceptional ageing potential of the estate.
