2008 Vintage wine

2008 Vintage wine

Our opinion on the 2008 vintage: capricious weather throughout France but successful wines

In the Bordeaux region, the unstable climate created disparities in the ripeness of the grapes. However, the good weather from mid-September to October favored the harvest.

As for Sauternes, the 2008 vintage was disappointing, with spring frosts decimating yields. Only large estates such as Château d‘Yquem delivered quality wines. The wines were pleasant but lacked complexity.

In Burgundy, the 2008 vintage is overall very good. The red wines are fruity and careful. They are generally more pleasant to drink young.

The 2008 vintage for Burgundy was generally very good despite weather challenges. The reds showed clear, bright fruit, while the whites were rich and spicy. Some disappointments due to hail, but very good wines were produced.

Finally, the winegrowers of the Rhône Valley have also suffered from difficult climatic conditions: wind, rain, hail. They then made a very strict selection during the harvest, to keep only the best of this vintage. The result is fine and seductive red wines.

In Champagne, the 2008 vintage was exceptional despite a difficult start. Changing climatic conditions led to successful ripening of the grapes, preserving much-needed acidity. The resulting wines were fresh, refined and considered legendary.

Our advice for buying a 2008 wine

In Bordeaux, we recommend the Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations which stand out this year. They have been able to produce remarkable wines.

In Burgundy, the best appellations delivered superb wines, with Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny offering refined and nuanced wines. Morey-St-Denis succeeded in producing intense spicy wines, while Nuits-St-Georges, Beaune and Pommard were also very good. Puligny-Montrachet stood out for the whites.

On the Rhône Valley side, the classic style wines were the most successful, delicately balanced with a pleasant mineral touch. Some reds lacked richness, but Gigondas and Hermitage were successful. The whites, although lacking in sophistication, had lovely mineral notes.

The 2008 vintage in Champagne is a vintage with which it is difficult to go wrong.
