Our opinion on the 1973 vintage: a decent vintage for Bordeaux wines. Want to know more? Read our blog article "Our opinion on the 1973 vintage". In Bordeaux, everything was going well until the rain arrived at the end of the season. Some water-logged grapes produced light wines, but the great estates managed to produce very fine wines thanks to rigorous selection. The Saint Estèphe and Saint Julien appellations (Ducuru Beaucaillou 1973) produced beautiful wines, but there were other successes elsewhere, such as Pétrus 1973, Latour 1973 or Domaine de Chevalier 1973.

And the quality of 1973 wines in the rest of France?

In Burgundy, despite a warm summer that helped the grapes ripen, the end of the season was very wet. Yields were high, but the red Burgundy wines are diluted. The white Burgundies fared better: they are pleasant, supple and distinguished.

The 1973 vintage was satisfactory for wines from the Rhône Valley. Some wines from Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage and Châteauneuf-du-Pape were particularly successful. Champagne was the great winner of the 1973 vintage. Rounded and balanced, 1973 ranks among Champagne’s greatest vintages.

Our advice on buying a 1973 wine.

In Bordeaux, the best wines of the 1973 vintage come from Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien, Pomerol and Graves, including Château Calon Ségur 1973, Château Pape Clément 1973 and Château Pavie 1973. The sweet wines are supple and elegant, as shown by Château d’Yquem 1973. For 1973 Burgundy wines, as in the Rhône, we recommend looking to the best producers, who managed to stand out that year. White Burgundies from 1973 can be a good choice and are worth prioritising. Consult expert tasting notes to help you decide. For each wine, you will find experts’ notes (Robert Parker, Michael Broadbent, JM Quarin...) whenever they have tasted it in the past.
