CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2002

Tasting notes: After bottling, Château Margaux 2002 had gained even more finesse, without losing any of its classic and tight tannic structure that bodes so well for excellent ageing. We ideally recommend waiting a few more years even though it already gives a lot of pleasure.

Grape variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~75%), Merlot (~20%), Petit Verdot (~3%), Cabernet Franc (~2%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Ageing: 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels

Maturity: Ready to drink

Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and game (deer, roe deer, wild boar) Pauillac lamb, Ceps (Risotto, pan-fried, omelette) Aged cheeses

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. Very refined on the nose...definitely First Growth quality with a beautiful floral scent. Margaux? Black cherries, a touch of cassis, violets and wild hedgerow. Superb clarity. Ripe succulent entry, very pure and very harmonious with filigree tannins and a natural, graceful finish that belies its power.

In chronicle 127 recounting the comparative tasting between Château Margaux and Haut-Brion, I was surprised by the excellent result of Château Margaux 2002. I have just retasted it at the château, with a lower potential score, but still the same pleasure score. Decanting: half an hour before. Dark and intense colour. Fruity, fresh nose, with a note of ink. Beautiful, fairly ample entry on the palate, then the wine develops juicy, melting, airy, with flavour and structure. Flavoursome, a little less mellow than the great vintages of Château Margaux, it finishes melting, long and particularly difficult to spit out.

Sweet and easy and round and digestible. Racy, with a very neat finish.

This is beautiful on the nose with currants, berries and flowers. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and pretty fruit. Needs a bit more fruit on the midpalate to be a classic Margaux, but clearly outstanding.

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the greatest wine estates in Bordeaux. In the AOC, Margaux is listed among the Premier Crus Classés in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

If it is a privilege to bear the name of its Margaux appellation, there is no doubt that Château Margaux does it great honour.

For several centuries, this Premier Cru Classé has expressed to the highest degree the exceptional qualities of terroirs patiently assembled by several generations of owners. Maintained and harvested exclusively by hand with extreme care, the 78 hectares of vineyards (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) draw their richness very deeply from a particularly dense and thick clay-gravel soil.

Fermentation in oak vats, after which the wine is strictly selected, is followed by 18 to 24 months of ageing in new oak barrels. A masterpiece among Bordeaux wines, the best according to some, Château Margaux reveals finesse and opulence, depth and complexity when tasted, and develops a bouquet of rare elegance with notes of rose, violet, and black fruits, underpinned by tight tannins that require patient ageing before reaching their full potential. The château also produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and a dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc).

The greatest vintages of Château Margaux are: 1900, 1928, 1953, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990
