Jancis Robinson October - 2005
Jancis Robinson
Deep tawny marmelade colour. Very slightly mousey to begin with on the nose. Palate very rich and extremely long, but a bit of dryness at the end. Not complete; a bit jagged. 16 and probably near its peak.

(2016) Izak Litwar / The most important Scandinavian Bordeaux Critic Only 10% of the harvest became Grand Vin. Pale brown. It was intense and strong with toffee aroma on the nose and palate. Began a bit tart on the palate, but gradually became more harmonious in the glass. In spite of barely good weather conditions, this vintage produced mighty and excellent wine, which should last 10 more years.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is a highly renowned Bordeaux wine estate. The Château mainly produces a great sweet wine as well as a white wine called "Y".

Since 1593, Château d'Yquem has been perfecting and passing on its expertise. This is how it stands alone as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification. The other classified Sauternes and Barsac occupy the ranks of Premier Cru Classé and Deuxième Cru Classé. Previously owned by the Lur Saluces family, Château d'Yquem has belonged to the LVMH group since 1997.

In pursuit of excellence, Yquem does not market its wine if the quality is not deemed sufficient. This has resulted in great vintages marking history such as 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1997, 2001, 2009.

The wines are characterized by their complexity due to a significant amount of residual sugars and aromas brought by Botrytis Cinerea. A relatively high acidity helps to balance the sweetness. Another characteristic for which Château d'Yquem is renowned is its longevity. In good years, a bottle will only show its exceptional qualities after one or two decades in a cellar, and with care it will keep them for a century or more, adding complexity.
