The 2005 vintage region by region: a great ageing year almost everywhere

Few years have succeeded as broadly as 2005. Marked by sunshine, wind and drought, the vines naturally limited their yields and concentrated healthy grapes, from the Médoc to the Côte de Nuits. Bordeaux, Burgundy and the northern Rhône produced very great age-worthy wines; the southern Rhône and the Languedoc followed with fine successes. Only Champagne and Alsace proved more uneven, though Alsace nonetheless excelled with its sweet wines. This is a vintage whose finest wines, still young today, reward patience.

Bordeaux 2005 — Dense reds with ripe tannins, still in their youth

In Bordeaux, 2005 delivered a near-ideal growing season: dry weather from January to September, strong sunshine and low rainfall, without excessive heat. Cool nights allowed slow and steady ripening, producing concentrated yet balanced reds with alcohol levels held around thirteen degrees. Decanter describes a year of remarkable homogeneity, with ripe tannins that remain firm and well-structured. Twenty years on, the Left Bank is often still young and tight, while the Right Bank opens up somewhat earlier. This is the heart of the vintage, best approached through the terroirs that successfully married density with freshness.

In Pessac-Léognan, Château Pape Clément produces a deep and velvety wine, while Domaine de Chevalier plays a more refined and fresh card, true to its gravelly terroir. In Saint-Julien, Château Beychevelle illustrates the Médoc elegance of the vintage, with ripe fruit and a fine tannic structure. On the Right Bank, the merlots from the finest terroirs of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion produced ample and already seductive wines.

Burgundy 2005 — The Côte de Nuits at its peak, whites to choose with care

Burgundy holds one of its finest modern vintages in 2005. The summer drought gave the pinot noirs a dense structure and firm tannins, wrapped in generous fruit and underpinned by preserved acidity. The Côte de Nuits stands out as the star of the year, with reds of rare purity and depth; the Côte de Beaune follows closely. The whites, however, require more discernment: more reliable in Chablis, they call for vigilance with certain Côte de Beaune cuvées. This is an ageing vintage, to be targeted first and foremost for its reds.

At the top of the hierarchy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti takes the vintage to its highest level in Vosne-Romanée, with grand crus of remarkable density and length. The Burgundy grand crus of the Côte de Nuits, in Gevrey-Chambertin as in Morey-Saint-Denis, confirm the very long ageing potential of the finest 2005s, while the whites from Puligny are best reserved for knowledgeable enthusiasts.

Rhône Valley 2005 — A dense and fresh north, a more contrasted south

In the Rhône Valley, 2005 shows a clear advantage for the north. In the northern Rhône, syrah produced balanced, dense and fresh wines with fine ageing potential according to the Guide Hachette, despite some spring frosts and rainfall. In the south, the accumulation of a water deficit made the year more contrasted, but old grenache and carignan vines produced fine wines, and the whites stand out for their aromatic richness. This is a Rhône vintage to approach first through the north, then through the best estates of the south.

In Hermitage, Chapoutier demonstrates the success of the northern Rhône even in its great terroir whites, with the saline tension characteristic of the vintage. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Deus ex Machina cuvée from Clos Saint-Jean embodies the controlled solar power of the south, alongside the age-worthy wines of Henri Bonneau, among the most sought-after bottles by collectors for this vintage.

Languedoc and Alsace 2005 — A great red from the South and a rare sweet wine

At the two extremities of the vineyard, 2005 offers two complementary profiles. In the Languedoc, the dry and sunny year produced concentrated and deep reds, built for long cellaring. In Alsace, the vintage was more uneven across terroirs, but it yielded rare successes in sweet wines: the Sélections de Grains Nobles, made from overripe grapes affected by botrytis — the noble rot that concentrates sugar and aromas — achieve a remarkable purity there, with excellent keeping potential.

Domaine de la Grange des Pères produces one of the great Languedoc reds of this vintage, dense, spicy and built for ageing. In Alsace, the Quintessence cuvée from Domaine Marcel Deiss, a gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles, offers an accessible and reliable entry point into the sweet wines of the vintage, combining opulent richness with freshness.
