Dark in colour and still going strong! Not as strong as the one drunk 10 years earlier, but impressive nonetheless.

Not exactly refined, but you do get a big, chewy mouthful of ripe, cassis, blackberries, herbs, pepper, and wet earth. Youthful, earthy, and loaded with tobacco, green herbs, forest leaf, and crunchy, meaty, dark currants, this concentrated, old-school classic might not improve, but it has plenty of petrol left in the tank. Drink from 2022-2035.

A seriously good wine in this category, but not as good as I remember. Dark red colour, with an inky centre. Blackberry and earth aromas. Full-bodied and rich, with berry flavours and a silky finish.

Jancis Robinson September - 2009

Very luscious-looking crimson – extremely dark, really almost out to the edge. Voluptuous nose that really is quite unlike its precedents – almost New World-like. Velvety with just a hint at the sort of St-Estèphe rigour one expects (and has seen in earlier vintages) here. Sweet start and still really quite youthful. Lots of dense fruit and much vibrancy on the palate. Thick and still with some of the trademark freshness and very firm tannic backbone – perhaps firmer than in some of the more recent vintages I'm about to taste? – but really quite, quite different from any previous vintage. Long, still chewy finish. Strong cassis flavour still.

Château Sociando Mallet
Château Sociando-Mallet Cru Bourgeois, a wine from Haut-Médoc in Gironde. Château Sociando-Mallet is a wine prized by fine wine enthusiasts, as evidenced by its annual success in en primeur sales. Jean Gautreau's wine is one of the great overlooked wines from the 1855 classification. Because it is not officially part of the nobility of Médoc classified growths - even though it rivals more than a few - Château Sociando-Mallet must remain modest in terms of pricing. It thus offers one of the best value-for-money ratios among all great Bordeaux wines!
