The 1979 Léoville Las Cases was a great surprise. In appearance, it showed a slight brown tone with some sediment, reflecting its age. The initial nose presented ripe plum, cherry, earthy tones, and leather, all beautifully integrated. On the palate, the wine had a wonderful mouthfeel with fully resolved tannins, offering a seamless and elegant texture. Tasted side by side with a 2016 Léoville Poyferré Pavillon, the 1979 Las Cases completely outshone it, displaying remarkable depth, complexity, and layered nuances that evolved beautifully in the glass. A stunning example of a mature Bordeaux at its peak.

Almost opaque. Vigorous nose: tar, ink, blackcurrant & soot. Very tannic & full-bodied palate. Damsons. But harmonious and smooth. Like an 86 - very Cabernet Sauvignon dominated. Liquorice/coffee notes on the finish. Opulent stylish Las Cases - the best of the 70's.

Ruby red colour, with vermilion reflections. Evolving. Very bright. Very beautiful and intense. Clean and intense nose. Nuances of ripe fruit, touch of wood and spice. Cedar note. Fine, complex and rather open. On swirling, clean and intense. Quite powerful. Balsamic and rich (caramel, vanilla, spice.) Very fresh. Clean, soft and fruity attack. Development on a fleshy, elongated, very well-balanced structure which evolves with a fine, rather juicy tactile contact, towards a rounded finish that fades gently, quite elegant and already melted. Charming. Very good. Ready to drink.

Medium-bodied, bright, crisp red fruits are at the core of the wine. On the secondary side, the tobacco, forest leaf, earth, peppery spice and herbs add colour the piquant red berry notes. Firm and crisp, with a sharp cherry/cranberry, spice and tobacco note in the finish, the wine requires drinking.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most emblematic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, recognised for the precision, depth and longevity of its wines. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has distinguished itself for over a century through a level of exigence and qualitative consistency that places it at the summit of the Médoc hierarchy.

Coming from the former Léoville estate, the vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases is today protected by a historic walled enclosure, a rare singularity in Bordeaux, guaranteeing a strong parcel identity. Located immediately bordering the Gironde, facing the great terroirs of Pauillac, the estate benefits from a privileged environment, conducive to a slow and homogeneous maturation of the grapes.

The grape variety blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, gives the wines a profound structure and remarkable ageing potential. Among the emblematic vintages are Château Léoville Las Cases 1945, Château Léoville Las Cases 1982, Château Léoville Las Cases 1990, Château Léoville Las Cases 1986, Château Léoville Las Cases 2000, Château Léoville Las Cases 2005, Château Léoville Las Cases 2014., regularly acclaimed for their balance and development potential. The estate also produces a recognised second wine, Clos du Marquis, offering a more accessible interpretation of the Las Cases style.
