Cellar Tracker June - 2024
Cellar Tracker
This was a wedding anniversary wine. A clean foil and the top of the cork was pristine. Slight reduction on opening that blocked the aromatic profile for approximately 30 minutes or so. After an hour in the glass this presented a prominent cedar, dried herbs, cigar wrapper, brambly grasses, and a faint cassis. On day 2 the cedar and brambly grass are aromatically predominant. On day one the tannins remain noticeable on the attack where the dried herb, cedar, and tobacco from the nose carry through the mid-palate. A modest lift of acidity keeps this fresh enough to prevent the tannin from overwhelming the palate whilst preserving the tertiary characteristics throughout the evening. The finish really fans out with good length where a savoury herb, plum, and mild tobacco coat your entire mouth with a rusticity of tannin and smoky earthiness. On day two the palate experience is strikingly similar to day one with the cedar and dried herbs continuing to exert influence over the tasting. The finish remains satisfying with a subtle length even after overnight storage. Overall this has a well delineated frame that moves along with an elegant rusticity and a purpose driven finish.

Christer Byklum: Ruby, thin brick rim. Cedar, red and dark fruits, figs, dates, some spices, nuanced, complex nose, tobacco and cigars. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, figs, dates, minerals, pencil shave, layered, lovely balance, long finish.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Like several other 1988s, this wine's rather hard, unyielding, early style has given way to a classically structured Bordeaux with a very youthful colour (younger than the 1989), deep, earthy, cassis fruit intermixed with wood, smoke, mineral, and a hint of roasted herbs. The wine has excellent depth, medium to full body, moderate tannin, and a very youthful, vigorous feel. It is approachable, but seems destined to outlive the more renowned and expensive 1989. Somewhat of a sleeper of the vintage.

Dark, unified colour, intense and evolved. Moderately aromatic nose, fruity, smoky, with a note of cedar. Rich on the attack, smooth on the development, with a fruit still quite fresh, the wine evolves well constructed, flavourful, on a slightly firm finish.

Vinum Wine Magazine November - 2017

Having remained very closed for almost two decades, not to say forbidding, it now shows all the class of this estate, with complex, floral-spicy-fruity aromatics; of great elegance in the mouth, with supporting structure and superb length.

Jancis Robinson March - 2014

Delightful and fully mature. The 1988s were chunky and austere for so long but, to judge from this wine, the best have come into their own at last. This was beautifully balanced, even if pretty dry but had evolved a delightfully classic perfume. No more than medium weight but with no tannins left in evidence. Very fragrant and complex

Château Leoville Barton
Château Leoville Barton
Château Léoville Barton is a wine estate located in the heart of Saint-Julien, in the Gironde department. Benefiting from the appellation of its commune, it is classified as a Second Grand Cru in the 1855 classification. The 45-hectare Leoville Barton vineyard is planted with 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, on a marvellous terroir renowned as the best in the world for vines, and benefiting from ideal climatological conditions. Ageing: 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, on average 60% new Due to the absence of a château on this terroir, the wine is traditionally aged in the cellars of its sister estate, Langoa-Barton, which it regularly outclasses despite identical grape varieties and vinification. Very well-balanced, this powerful and generous wine with character is considered one of the best Saint-Julien wines.
