Aromatically complex with layers of sweet, elegant, earthy, red fruits, there is a gorgeous refined quality here, with ample depth of flavor, energy length and complexity today making this a top vintage for Chave. Plus, it is drinking in the sweet spot. Mature Chave has become tremendously expensive over the past few years, while still quite pricey, when compared to the 89 & 90, this is a well-priced vintage for Chave.

Medium ruby-garnet with a broader ochre rim. Finely spiced dark berry fruit, notes of herbs and olives, blackberries, delicate mint, orange zest, smoky and tobacco-like, opens up further in the glass. Juicy, elegant, fresh wild berry aromas, a finesse-rich acid structure, mineral, the oak delivers very good pressure on the finish, raspberries and lemons on the aftertaste, a great food companion, showing remarkable class.

Another powerful nose, schisty, gravelly mineral qualities, but plenty of sweet, perfumed fruit with notes of caramel and again a lovely animal edge. The palate is quite dry and savoury, with a serious, tannin and acid backbone and a nice fleshy texture. The fruit does push through and has plenty of ripe sweetness, but the balance of this vintage doesn't sing quite as purely. Jean-Louis thought this was rather closed, so my verdict of very good indeed might well turn out to be too cautious.

And lastly, the 1988 Hermitage is an elegant, perfumed and mineral-laced effort that's drinking at point. Giving up plenty of sweet cherry and red currants, leather, crushed rock and hints of green olive, it has no hard edges, solid mid-palate richness and a focused finish. It's a mature, elegant and classy Hermitage to drink over the coming 4-5 years.

The Jean Louis Chave estate is the jewel of a centuries-old family. Jean Louis Chave is the sixth generation of winemaker in this estate. The domain is renowned for its high-quality Hermitage wines. Located in the North of the Rhône region, the estate includes a 10-hectare vineyard for the production of its red wines; including a plot of very old vines Les Roucoules, another 80-year-old Les Bessards, relatively young vines at l'Ermite, extremely old at Péléat and Beaumes, and 50-year-old vines at Méal.

Each of these vineyards produces a wine with slightly different palettes of aromas, textures and flavours, but the "sum of the parts" is far more interesting than each cuvée taken individually. The red Hermitage from Domaine Chave becomes dazzling after several years of ageing. Full-bodied and concentrated, magnificently complex and refined, it develops a vast array of aromas ranging from blackcurrant to smoky notes, with hints of prune and spices.

The white wine from Domaine Chave develops creamy and honeyed aromas of hazelnut, peach and apricot, with a rare unctuousness, and has the potential to age for several decades. These Hermitages stand out, with their freshness, balance, finesse, and length, clearly above all others.
