Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Just gorgeous from start to finish. The wine, with its core of smoke, tobacco leaf, tar, leafy herbs, cedar and spicy red fruits is elegant, balanced, fresh and probably at its peak.

Red colour. Evolved. Medium to good intensity. Nose of medium intensity. Discreet. Tobacco. On swirling, fine. Discreet. Much more discreet than the Corton. Notes of smoked pine, leather, incense. Refined entry on the palate, developing on a juicy, rich but very slender structure, with an open, offered flavour of leather, tobacco, cigar. Complex and refined tannicity, finishing austere and subtle. Great length. A superb wine with very persistent aroma.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the La Mission/Haut-Brion dinner at The Ledbury. This is the best bottle of Haut-Brion '85 that I have encountered with a sensational bouquet that is almost identical to the last bottle in July, but with even greater lift and intensity, whilst the palate shows a touch more precision and poise that marries so effortlessly with its corpulent, sensual texture. Drinking perfectly now, it feels almost too good to cellar for longer! Drink now-2030.

Classic Haut-Brion that is quiet and not that expressive. The palate offers layers of cedarbox, tea leaves and leather with dried red currants in the background. The firm tannins suggest it will keep easily for a decade or two.

Nose of black fruits. Cedar. Tobacco. A great deal of class. Dense. Very fine tannins, elegant, supple. The palate is delicious, rich. The most incredible thing about this wine is the length. The last mouthful lasted more than 2 minutes. An impression of infinity. Remarkable.

Falstaff January - 2010

Medium ruby garnet, delicately ochre-tinged, broader water rim. On the nose, very delicate notes of dark berry compote, subtle animalistic hint, delicate mountain pine, ethereal nuances. On the palate, full of finesse, mineral, refined structure, fine noble wood note, remarkably youthful, ripe cherry fruit on the finish, delicate citrus zest, great length, impressive freshness.

Much lighter colour, with a medium/dark ruby density. Gorgeous, seductive coffee-bean, earth, truffle, leather and tobacco nose, with plenty of soft fruit, suggesting strawberry, leafy blackcurrant and berries. Warm autumnal fruit floods the palate too. Soft and creamily-textured, it is rich and sweet (so typical of this lovely, lovely vintage) and there is plenty of juicy berry fruit. Delicious cedary structure gives definition into the long, rich finish. Complete and delightful, it might lack a little of the complexity and structure of the '90 for example, but this is drinking just beautifully and was another of my favourites, finishing with a milky cappucino sweetness.

Supple and harmonious, with beautifully balanced fruity, spicy, and earthy tobacco notes. While not a powerhouse, it is nonetheless very fine and delicious to drink now.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

It was in 1855 that Château Haut Brion was honoured with the highest distinction of Médoc wines: Premier Cru Classé. This title is all the more exceptional as Château Haut Brion is the only non-Médoc estate to be part of the Médoc wine classification, as well as the Graves wine classification as a Cru Classé!

Its terroir is indeed very similar to that of Latour. While not the most concentrated, Haut Brion is the noblest of the great wines of Pessac-Léognan and its longevity is unmatched in this area. The silkiness of its tannins is always exceptional.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest and yet the smallest in size of the Bordeaux vineyards classified as Premiers Grands Crus (Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Haut-Brion). Although vineyards have been present in the region since at least Roman times, the first mention of the Haut-Brion vineyard dates back only to 1423. In the early days, wines were known by the names of the parishes from which they came. Haut Brion was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and since then, illustrious figures have succeeded one another. The last of these, Clarence Douglas Dillon, was Secretary of the Treasury under the Kennedy administration. As its reputation grew, the name of the estate came to replace that of its owners. The concept of Grand Cru was born! We find the first mention of it in Samuel Pepys' diary, who wrote on 10 April 1663: "I have just tasted a French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which has the best and most special taste I have ever encountered..."

Among the many great vintages of Château Haut Brion, the exceptional years are 1926, 1945, 1953, 1959, 1961, 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000.
