Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the La Mission/Haut-Brion dinner at The Ledbury. This is the best bottle of Haut-Brion ’85 that I have encountered with a sensational bouquet that is almost identical to the last bottle in July, but with even greater lift and intensity, whilst the palate shows a touch more precision and poise that marries so effortlessly with its corpulent, sensual texture. Drinking perfectly now, it feels almost too good to cellar for longer! Drink now-2030.

Classic Haut-Brion that is quiet and not that expressive. The palate offers layers of cedarbox, tea leaves and leather with dried red currants in the background. The firm tannins suggest it will keep easily for a decade or two.

Nose of black fruits. Cedar. Tobacco. A classy wine. Thick. Very fine tannins, elegant, supple. The mouth is delicious, fat. The most incredible aspect of this wine is the length. The last sip lasted more than 2 minutes. An impressive finish. Remarkable.

Much lighter colour, with a medium/dark ruby density. Gorgeous, seductive coffee-bean, earth, truffle, leather and tobacco nose, with plenty of soft fruit, suggesting strawberry, leafy blackcurrant and berries. Warm autumnal fruit floods the palate too. Soft and creamily-textured, it is rich and sweet (so typical of this lovely, lovely vintage) and there is plenty of juicy berry fruit. Delicious cedary structure gives definition into the long, rich finish. Complete and delightful, it might lack a little of the complexity and structure of the '90 for example, but this is drinking just beautifully and was another of my favourites, finishing with a milky cappucino sweetness.

Red color. Evolved. Medium to good intensity. Medium-intensity nose. Discreet. Tobacco. Fine with swirling. Discreet. Much more discreet than the Corton. Notes of smoky pine, leather, and incense. Refined entry on the palate, developing into a juicy, rich, yet very slender structure, with a generous, open flavor of leather, tobacco, and cigar. Complex and refined tannicity, which finishes sappy and subtle. Great length. A superb wine with a very persistent aroma.

Just gorgeous from start to finish. The wine, with its core of smoke, tobacco leaf, tar, leafy herbs, cedar and spicy red fruits is elegant, balanced, fresh and probably at its peak.

It was in 1855 that Château Haut Brion was honored with the highest distinction of Médoc wines: Premier Cru Classé (First Growth). Château Haut Brion is the only non-Médoc domain to be included in the Médoc wine list, as well as the Graves wine classification as a Classified Growth!

Its soil is similar to elsewhere as a brother of Latour. Without being the most concentrated, Haut Brion is the most noble of wines from Pessac-Leognan and its longevity is unparalleled in the industry. The silky tannins are always exceptional. Chateau Haut-Brion is the oldest and yet the smallest of vineyards classified as Premiers Grands Crus in 1855 (Château Lafite-RothschildChâteau LatourChâteau MargauxChâteau Mouton RothschildChâteau Haut-Brion).

Although the vineyard has been active in the region since at least Roman times, the first mention of vineyards of Haut-Brion dates back only to 1423. In the early days, the wines were known by the name of the parishes where they came from. In the case of Haut-Brion, under the leadership of Pontac, the wine first bore the name of this noble and respectable family. Haut Brion was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and since famous people have succeeded. The last of them, Clarence Douglas Dillon, was Minister of Finance of the United States under the Kennedy administration. As its reputation grew, the name of the estate came to replace that of its owners. The concept of Grand Cru is born! We find the first mention in the diary of Samuel Pepys, who wrote April 10, 1663: "I just tasted a French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which has the best and most special taste I've ever enountered."

Among the many great vintages of Château Haut Brion, the exceptional vintages are 1926, 1945, 1953, 1959, 1961, 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000.
