Revista Adega : From Pessac-Léognan. This Haut Brion already shows its stable air, accompanied by ripe and juicy fruit, which brings a comforting sweetness on its way to honey and camphor. Very powerful tannins. And an aftertaste with iron and aromas of camphor, cedar and an animal touch. A wine with layers and layers of aromas, increasingly tertiary. It has the plasticity and delicacy of a racehorse filmed in slow motion.

 So, this is what a cigar smoking lounge smells like on a night when everyone seems to be enjoying their favourite Cuban cigar. Add to that, cherry pipe tobacco, burning leaves, currants, blackberries, leather, tar and scorched earth and you get an idea of the perfume. The palate is loaded with elegant, silky, fresh, spicy, sweet red fruits with a delicate edge. This was a very good bottle, though, I've had even better examples, as this wine can be majestic.

Five years since my last tasting of Haut-Brion 1982, and a pleasure to sink back into these stunning waves of sweet brambled raspberry and blackberry fruits. Tobacco, graphite, gunpowder tea, sandalwood, vanillin, grilled herbs and iodine come in waves, and this was a clear favourite around the table, balancing exuberance with finesse. Going back to the wine after an hour in the glass, it has held up excellently, but the saline tang was much more dominant.

 Supple and enveloping, the 1982 Haut-Brion is drinking brilliantly today, wafting from the glass with aromas of red berries and plums, tobacco leaf, cedar box, scorched earth, cigar smoke and walnuts. Medium to full-bodied, broad and sensual, it's fleshy and giving, with a rich core of fruit, melting tannins and a long, resonant finish. At age 40, this is the most charming of the 1982 first growths, yet despite its outgoing personality, it seems to gain in stature with every passing year.

 Beautifully rich, deep colour. Still ruby at core, with broad rim of orangey-red. Absolutely gorgeous nose; sumptuous, filled with warm autumnal berries, rich mulberry, brambles and a hint of damp woodland. There are nuances of cedar and tobacco, but a core of ripe, sweet cassis. The palate has elegance with a wonderful core of minerality giving a very clean impression. It doesn't have the weight of some of the other wines here, but has terrific purity and balance, a very composed wine with fine length. The acidity is cool and clean and is well integrated. Poised and beautifully proportioned without being flashy. Should drink well through two decades more.

Château Haut Brion

Château Haut-Brion is one of the most emblematic wines of Bordeaux. In 1855, it received the supreme distinction of Premier Cru Classé, an exceptional recognition as it is the only non-Médoc estate to appear in the classification of Médoc wines, whilst also being classified as Cru Classé de Graves. It is today an absolute reference for the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Its terroir, close to that of Château Latour, gives the wines of Haut-Brion a unique nobility. Without seeking extreme power, the wine is distinguished by its elegance, the finesse of its tannins and a remarkable ageing potential, often considered one of the greatest in Bordeaux.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest, and also the smallest in area, of the Bordeaux Premiers Grands Crus Classés, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux and Château Mouton Rothschild. Whilst the presence of vines in the region dates back to Roman times, the first written mention of the vineyard dates from 1423. The estate was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and quickly gained international renown. Its reputation was such that it contributed to the very birth of the notion of Grand Cru, mentioned as early as 1663 by Samuel Pepys in his famous diary. More recently, the estate belonged to Clarence Douglas Dillon, former United States Secretary of the Treasury, further adding to its prestige.

Among the most emblematic vintages of Château Haut-Brion are: Château Haut-Brion 1928, Château Haut-Brion 1945, Château Haut-Brion 1953, Château Haut-Brion 1959, Château Haut-Brion 1961, Château Haut-Brion 1982, Château Haut-Brion 1990, Château Haut-Brion 1995 and Château Haut-Brion 2000.
