Dark and earthy aromas with coke, minerals and something green and medicinal. Quite skinny and light weighted on the palate, but the concentration and persistence is there. Impressive for this vintage.

SoDivin November - 2012

This wine made us a little apprehensive as the vintage is difficult. Indeed, on opening, it appears quite thin. The alcohol and acidity dominate. Lacks richness and body. The wine is not unpleasant but it is rather "light". We rate it 80, no more. And yet, as the tasting progresses, as the bottle empties, the wine improves. The smoky nose of the Château reveals itself, the body develops, the roundness too. This wine becomes very good, balanced, full, generous. As often with old wines, the second half of the bottle is much more interesting. The rating goes from 80 to 89/100.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

Château Haut-Brion is one of the most iconic wines of Bordeaux. In 1855, it received the supreme distinction of Premier Cru Classé, an exceptional recognition as it is the only non-Médoc estate to feature in the classification of Médoc wines, whilst also being classified as a Cru Classé de Graves. It is today an absolute reference of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Its terroir, close to that of Château Latour, lends the wines of Haut-Brion a unique nobility. Without seeking extreme power, the wine distinguishes itself through its elegance, the finesse of its tannins and a remarkable ageing potential, often considered one of the greatest in Bordeaux.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest, and also the smallest in area, of the Bordeaux Premiers Grands Crus Classés, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux and Château Mouton Rothschild. While the presence of the vine in the region dates back to Roman times, the first written mention of the vineyard is from 1423. The estate was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and quickly gained international renown. Its reputation was such that it played a part in the very birth of the notion of Grand Cru, mentioned as early as 1663 by Samuel Pepys in his famous diary. More recently, the estate belonged to Clarence Douglas Dillon, former United States Secretary of the Treasury, further adding to its prestige.

The first of the great crus to be vinified in stainless steel vats, as early as 1961, the estate ages its reds for up to twenty-four months in barrels sourced mainly from its own cooperage. Its great vintages mark the history of Bordeaux, from the 1931 wine and the post-war 1949 vintage to the modern benchmarks of the 1982 wine, the 1988 and the 1990 vintage, not forgetting the second wine Bahans Haut Brion, which became Le Clarence de Haut-Brion.
