Jean-Marc Quarin
(6-1999) Beautiful colour. Curiously, the nose has developed the empyreumatic aromas of Pomerols. Very fruity too. Smooth attack. Slender structure, medium-bodied, with the smoky taste of Pessac Léognan. The wine caresses the palate on a delicate structure where the tannin has no roughness. Very good.

(9-1997) There is no doubting the fact that Christian Moueix is making a major effort to upgrade La Fleur-Petrus and produce a wine that is among the finest of the appellation. As I reported last year, Moueix acquired a sensational 10-acre parcel of very old vines from La Fleur-Petrus's neighbour, Le Gay, increasing this vineyard's size to 33 acres. The new vineyard plot paid immediate dividends based on how exceptionally rich and powerful, yet still elegant the 1995 has turned out. The attractive kirsch, cherry, pain grillée-scented nose is followed by a medium-bodied, restrained, pure, measured wine. The 1994 offers an impressively saturated colour, as well as an inner-core of sweet, concentrated fruit, and moderate tannin in the finish. All the richness, extract, and balance are present in this closed, but impressively-endowed wine.

Neighbour of Petrus, Château La Fleur-Pétrus is a remarkable Pomerol, refined and round, one of the greatest Pomerols, absolutely essential and still accessible, if one can say so. The terroir of Château La Fleur-Pétrus plays its role fully, with deep gravel soil that gives the wine a natural elegance and finesse. The Cabernet Franc, used in greater quantity, gives superb results, with wines that need almost ten years of aging!
