Jancis Robinson June - 2025

A magnificent, high-toned nose (I wonder what the VA is?) that carries masses of tangy red-berried fruit and the scent of old church pews. On the palate, blackberries, wild strawberry, membrillo and blood orange, distinctly tangy and underpinned by the taste of autumn – coppery leaves, damp forest earth, sweet woodsmoke and truffle. Violets on the end. The tannins are superbly resolved, mellifluous, seamlessly carrying the wine. It may well age longer than I have suggested.

Andreas Larsson - Tasted
Bright garnet core and hue. Some maturity and complexity on the nose, with leather, garrigue, pepper, tobacco, and layers of sweet red fruit. The palate is ample with a rounded texture, digestible with peppery red fruit and garrigue flavours, refreshing and grainy tannin with good layers, complexity, and a long, savoury finish.

A well-crafted, juicy red blend of syrah, mourvedre and grenache, featuring notes of cherries, cured meat, wet earth and a touch of peppercorns. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and an inviting texture. The finish is delightful. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now.

Domaine Alain Chabanon
Domaine Alain Chabanon

Domaine Alain Chabanon is one of the most original and widely recognised names in the Languedoc. Established since 1992 around Montpeyroux and Jonquières, at the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac, Alain Chabanon has built over thirty years an eighteen-hectare vineyard spread across five communes — a diversity of terroirs that feeds the richness and complexity of his wines.

The son of teachers, nothing predestined him to the vine. It was through contact with Bordeaux châteaux and then alongside winemaker Alain Brumont in Madiran that he forged his vision: wines of finesse and elegance, built for long ageing, that need not envy the great crus of other regions. Since his first vintage released in 1992, this exacting standard has never wavered. The estate has been certified in organic farming since 2002 and in Demeter biodynamics since 2011, one of the rare certifications of this level in the appellation.

What sets Domaine Alain Chabanon apart from its peers is a rare combination: very long ageing — up to thirty-six months — which gives the wines exceptional depth and complexity, and a Merlot planted on a unique terroir of rounded pebbles that produces one of the most singular cuvées in the Languedoc. The vintages 2014, 2016, 2019, 2020 rank among the finest expressions of the estate.
