Vinum Wine Magazine November - 2010
Vinum Wine Magazine
The Primeur comment (“Seductive, smoky aromatics; rich and full in the mouth, dense and endlessly long, perfectly ripe fruit, polished tannin: a millennium wine. The power of Pomerol, the fruit freshness of Burgundy. A red wine cannot taste any better.”) seems almost laconic compared to what I have in my glass today, almost ten years later. Because the 2000 Conseillante is truly one of the most exquisite things one can find in Bordeaux. The aromatics still seem closed – that is normal, I would let the best 2000s mature for at least another ten years – and need the decanter to develop. The bouquet is then of fine, chiselled spice, with a hint of herbs and flowers. What impresses even more today than en Primeur is the sheer elegance of the wine, the incredible quality of the tannins, their velvety softness and finesse. They are round, but reveal potential, not least thanks to their pronounced liveliness. The wine possesses flesh and fullness, yet its real strength is its freshness. Measured against the Primeur top score, it is worth 25 points today – and 30 at the next anniversary?

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there's a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy, this is a beautifully pure wine that has just hit its plateau of full maturity, although ideally I think it would benefit strongly from another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink well for two to three decades.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Still holding on to its last gasp of youth here, this might be a slightly more masculine Pomerol. The soaring aromatics are in play here. Full bodied, concentrated and with depth of flavor, the wine offers a structured wall of ripe, sweet, plum, cherry and truffle, along with a lot of tannin for a Pomerol of this age. Granted, this was from a magnum, so that should be taken into consideration. Still, I would give it a few more years to see where it goes.

Château La Conseillante
Château La Conseillante

The name La Conseillante first appeared in the mid-18th Century. It was inherited from an influential person who ran the property almost 300 years ago: Catherine Conseillan.

On the Pomerol plateau with a clay-gravel soil with iron deposits in the subsoil, the wine comes from a grape variety that certainly values Merlot (70%), but Cabernet Franc, at 25%, gives the wines a particular freshness, complexity and richness.

La Conseillante with its purple capsule recalls the characteristic perfume of the growth. These elements, chosen in 1871 by the Nicolas brothers, remain elegantly modern at the dawn of the 21st Century. Since that year, the fifth generation of the Nicolas family has been managing the Château.
