CHÂTEAU BEYCHEVELLE 2000

Château Beychevelle 2000 is an excellent wine. Composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (49%) and supplemented with Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (6%), the wine is very successful. A delicate classified growth with a floral nose, also marked by fruity notes (blueberry and currant). On the palate, the attack is soft, delicate and tasty. Keep for several more years.

A wine I've tasted several times i the past (and bought en primeur) showing a much more firm. lean, edgy liquorice and black plum fruit on the nose, with cherry and mineral edges adding a lot more nervosity than in previous tastings. Less opulent for sure on the palate, but there are reserves here, with that espresso-supported black fruit all constrained by grippy tannins and a liquorice and damson-skin severity. Over the course of an hour this starts to fill out, with the mid-palate developing a much more lush, blackcurranty fruit and hints of chocolaty richness. This is in a slightly awkward stage, but I am very happy to have some tucked away.

Wonderful floral and blackberry aromas follow through to a compressed palate of full-bodied tannins and ripe fruit. Yet very fine and silky on the palate. Best Beychevelle I have had in years.

If any wine could be described as beautiful, then Beychevelle is beautiful. Its flavors of liquorice and blackcurrant are smooth and opulent, well proportioned. The texture is rich, ripe and generous.

Supple, round and easy to drink now with evolved flavors of cedar, dried currant and tobacco. Well crafted but unexciting Beychevelle with sweet, subtle fruit that is enjoyable now but should age well over the next decade.

Last bottle. Crimson red, nose of spicy cassis, lots of earth tones, red currants. Medium to full bodied, some rusticity in this wine typical of Beychevelle pré modern era, finishes tannic and long despite two hours in decanter. Still young.

Medium ruby garnet, delicate ochre rim. Hints of nougat and caramel, ripe sweet fruit, fine plum compote. Substantial, quite sweet and powerful, aromatic in character, almost like a small Vintage Port, very accessible, delicate bitter chocolate note, good further development potential.

The nose offers tobacco, blackberry, cassis, wet earth, cedar chest and cassis. On the palate, the wine is firm, fresh and traditional. This is well made and developing nicely, but there is a lack of excitement in the wine that would make me want to open another bottle. Tasters that prefer less ripe, lean, traditional or classic Bordeaux wine, will like this a lot more than I did.

Mid crimson with lots of sweetness. Very gentle and a definite 2000. Good vintage definition from Beychevelle! Easy and only very slightly inky. Long and rich.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle is one of the most emblematic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Fourth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has embodied for several centuries a singular style, at once elegant, balanced and profoundly Médocain. Its name, derived from the legend of "Baisse-Voile" (Lower the Sail), directly refers to its majestic location on the banks of the Gironde and its historical role in Bordeaux river trade.

The vineyard of Château Beychevelle extends over approximately 90 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. The deep gravel soils, typical of Saint-Julien, ensure optimal drainage and promote regular maturation, contributing to the qualitative consistency of the cru.

The wines of Beychevelle are distinguished by their harmony, silky texture and aromatic finesse, combining black fruits, spicy notes and a subtly oaked touch. Capable of evolving gracefully over several decades, they rank among the classic references of the Médoc. Vintages such as Château Beychevelle 1947, Château Beychevelle 1967, Château Beychevelle 1989, Château Beychevelle 1983, Château Beychevelle 1986, Château Beychevelle 2005, perfectly illustrate the consistency and ageing potential of this great wine.
