Vertdevin April - 2019

The nose is elegant, powerful, precise and offers a beautiful grain as well as a beautiful density. It reveals notes of wild blackcurrant, wild strawberry and small notes of violet, Cuben pepper combined with fine notes of Ceylon tea, exotic spices as well as very discreet notes of undergrowth and tonka bean. The palate is fruity, juicy, elegant, nicely indulgent, precise and offers a beautiful definition, a tangy/juicy structure, a slightly frank side, complexity as well as richness (but full of finesse and elegance). On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/tangy blackcurrant, juicy/tangy raspberry and small touches of tangy/juicy wild blackberry combined with fine notes of juicy/tangy small red fruits, undergrowth, flowers (violet, lilac), caramelisation, undergrowth as well as a very discreet note of tonka bean. The tannins are elegant and well constructed. A beautiful finish!

What a lovely nose on this wine, with exquisite aromatics of kirsch-like, soaring fruit, with hints of eucalyptus and Chinese dried plums. There is sandalwood and some smokiness over a deep well of cassis and bursting damson fruit. The palate shows stunning concentration for Beychevelle, with a mid-palate richness and breadth of flavour, with bloody, earth-streaked black fruits against a firm tannic framework and an edge of acidity. One of the best 1986's I have tasted, and better balanced than many.

Remarkably complex with rich, concentrated, tannic currant, spice and anise flavours, wrapped in smoky, cedary oak that gets tastier with every sip.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1986 Beychevelle, which I tasted from magnum at the château, has what you might describe as a light-hearted nose with joie-de-vivre. Even from a larger format, among many 1986s tasted, this is one of the most approachable with wild strawberry, mulberry, cola and graphite aromas that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with spice and clove on the entry. It comes across as fleshier than I was anticipating and atypically for the vintage, tapering towards the finish. Arguably rustic compared to some of its Saint Julien bedfellows, it nonetheless has charm and a sense of classicism.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle is one of the most emblematic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Fourth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has embodied for several centuries a singular style, at once elegant, balanced and profoundly Médocain. Its name, derived from the legend of "Baisse-Voile" (Lower the Sail), directly refers to its majestic location on the banks of the Gironde and its historical role in Bordeaux river trade.

The vineyard of Château Beychevelle extends over approximately 90 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. The deep gravel soils, typical of Saint-Julien, ensure optimal drainage and promote regular maturation, contributing to the qualitative consistency of the cru.

The wines of Beychevelle are distinguished by their harmony, silky texture and aromatic finesse, combining black fruits, spicy notes and a subtly oaked touch. Capable of evolving gracefully over several decades, they rank among the classic references of the Médoc. Vintages such as Château Beychevelle 1947, Château Beychevelle 1967, Château Beychevelle 1989, Château Beychevelle 1983, Château Beychevelle 1986, Château Beychevelle 2005, perfectly illustrate the consistency and ageing potential of this great wine.
