Tom Cannavan January - 2017
Tom Cannavan
The nose here is much, much more vegetal than the 1986, and slightly dank, with truffly, undergrowth qualities that is much less 'pure', but not entirely unattractive. On the palate there is an intense fruit sweetness, but there is a slightly raisined quality amongst black fruits. A warmth of spices and cedary caramel suffuses the finish, with some orangey acidity and fading tannins into the finish. A wine that is tiring, but still has some elegance and charm.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
(1-1998) Technically, the 1976 Beychevelle is not the most perfect wine. The acidity is low and the pH high, but statistics aside, this wine has retained its immensely enjoyable, plummy, fat, fruity character. I would have thought it to be in decline now, but this seductive effort from Beychevelle continues to provide surprising pleasure.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle watches over the Gironde at the southern tip of Saint-Julien, where the legend of the "lower sail" gave it its name and the griffin-prowed ship its emblem. Classified in 1855, it draws from its deep Garonne gravels a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and owes its nickname of "Versailles of the Médoc" to its pleasure château.

Vinified plot by plot and aged in oak barrels, the wines combine silky tannins, dark fruit and great ageing potential. The landmark vintages of the estate range from 1982 and 1986 to 1989 for the great classics, then to 2005 and the 2016 vintage, the first to emerge from the new plot-by-plot winery. L'Amiral de Beychevelle offers the most accessible expression.
