Château Beychevelle watches over the Gironde at the southern tip of Saint-Julien, where the legend of the "lower sail" gave it its name and the griffin-prowed ship its emblem. Classified in 1855, it draws from its deep Garonne gravels a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and owes its nickname of "Versailles of the Médoc" to its pleasure château.

Vinified plot by plot and aged in oak barrels, the wines combine silky tannins, dark fruit and great ageing potential. The landmark vintages of the estate range from 1982 and 1986 to 1989 for the great classics, then to 2005 and the 2016 vintage, the first to emerge from the new plot-by-plot winery. L'Amiral de Beychevelle offers the most accessible expression.
