The great wine of Château du Tertre is a perfect expression of Margaux‘s terroir. A deep color, beautiful richness and an interesting aromatic palette. The wine improves over time and becomes tastier. It is a long-keeping wine, especially in great vintages where it can age in the cellar for 10 to 20 years. Among the finest successes, we recommend the 1995 and 1996 vintages as well as the 1998 vintage. Finally, the Château du Tertre 2000 and Château du Tertre 2009 are excellent.

The history of Château Du Tertre

Château Du Tertre is one of Bordeaux‘s oldest estates, dating back almost 1,000 years to the 12th century.

In the 15th century, Thomas de Montaigne became lord of the estate following his marriage to Jacquette d‘Arsac, who gave her name to the property.

In the 18th century, the vineyard was established by British-born Pierre Mitchell, founder of the first glassworks in Bordeaux. Château Du Tertre was born in 1736.

Many owners succeeded one another at the head of the estate: Henri de Koenigswarter (19th century), Achille de Wilde (1925) before being bought by the Capbern-Gasquetton family in 1961, who also own Château Calon-Ségur in Saint-Estèphe. Major renovation work was undertaken, as well as replanting of the vineyard.

In 1997, the estate became the property of Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma. The family invested heavily to modernize the vineyard and winery.

In 2021, Château Du Tertre passed into the hands of CNP Assurances, who entrusted the running of the estate to the Helfrich family (Grands Chais de France).

What are the characteristics of Château Du Tertre wines?

Château Du Tertre has a 52-hectare single vineyard that has remained unchanged since 1855. It is planted on the heights of a plateau, the summit of Arsac‘s gravelly croup and the highest point in the Margaux appellation.

On this magnificent terroir, the 40-year-old vines are a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (43%), Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (19%) and Petit Verdot (5%) planted on sandy-clay gravel soils, ensuring optimum drainage of rainwater and deep rooting.

The wines are made with respect for the environment and quality is paramount, which is why 11 ha of the vineyard are biodynamically farmed and 41 ha are "lutte raisonnée". The estate pioneered the use of egg-shaped concrete vats in the Médoc to preserve the minerality of the wines.

Château de Tertre produces a wine of great personality and freshness. It has aromas of red and black fruits, spices and a fine tannic structure. This wine from old vines is full of length and tension.

Château du Tertre‘s second wine, Les Hauts du Tertre, is produced in a similar way to the grand vin, but from younger vines and a majority of Merlot. A fruity, elegant and silky wine with supple tannins, worthy of the wines of Margaux.
