The history of Château Cantenac Brown

The Château was founded over two centuries ago, in 1806, by a visionary Scottish wine merchant, John-Lewis Brown. Through his work and high standards, the wine of Château Cantenac Brown still ranks among the greatest today.

After several changes of ownership, Château Cantenac Brown has belonged to the Le Lous family since 2019. Tristan Le Lous, an agricultural engineer and current owner of the estate, and José Sanfins, general manager, share the same desire for environmental quality and in 2020 embarked on a unique challenge: the construction of a new eco-responsible winery made entirely of terracotta.

What are the characteristics of Château Cantenac Brown wines?

The vines of Château Cantenac Brown are planted on exceptional terroirs composed of gravel, clay-limestone and small gravel soils spread across the plateaus of Margaux and Cantenac, which give the wines great ageing potential.

This diversity of terroirs gives great richness to the wine, with a consistent quality across vintages, worthy of its classification.

The property of Château Cantenac Brown includes the vineyard, wooded park and grazing sheep, covering a total area of 89 hectares, of which 49 hectares are in the Margaux appellation, 3 hectares in the Bordeaux appellation and 1 hectare of white Bordeaux.

In the vineyard of Château Cantenac-Brown, we find the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties in the following proportions: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc for the red varieties, 90% Sauvignon and 10% Semillon for the white varieties.

The grand red wine of Château Cantenac Brown is renowned for its elegance, great finesse and character typical of Margaux appellation wines. Its aromas are powerful with spicy notes, red & black fruits and freshness. Its tannins are both dense and fine.

A wine with a nice tension on the finish and high ageing potential.

Château Cantenac-Brown produces another red wine, Brio de Cantenac-Brown, from younger Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines.

There is also a dry white wine "Alto de Cantenac Brown" produced in small quantities by Château Cantenac Brown, which is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Semillon.
