In Bordeaux, harvests were abundant and quality was excellent. Favored by a hot summer that led to grape over-ripening, the châteaux were able to produce very pleasant, fruity and well-balanced wines. The Sauternes are remarkable. Unctuous and honeyed, the Yquem 1983, Climens 1983, Fargues 1983 and Gilette 1983 châteaux offer exceptional wines. That was not the case in Gevrey-Chambertin, where damp conditions caused rot, although enough grapes could be saved. Red Burgundies are fruity, with the aromas so characteristic of Pinot Noir. The whites are very full-bodied, with high alcohol and good acidity.
There were also several successful 1983 Champagnes, thanks to an abundant and exceptionally healthy harvest. The wines are rich, complex and opulent, but are hard to find today. Finally, the Rhône Valley wines are exceptional in every respect.
Bordeaux produced some exceptional wines. Wines from the Margaux appellation are even considered better than those of the 1982 vintage. The sweet wines are also excellent, fruity and refined.
In Burgundy, wine quality varies, making this a challenging vintage for most appellations. Look instead to the reds of the Côte de Beaune and the wines of the Côte de Nuits, which remain excellent. The whites tend to be very full-bodied, leaning more towards opulence than refined elegance because of the damp conditions late in the season.
The reds of the northern Rhône are superb, particularly wines from the Hermitage appellation.
