Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Medium to deep garnet coloured, the 2009 Pétrus gives up glorious scents of preserved plums, redcurrant jelly, dried rose petals, blackberry compote and mulberries with touches of liquorice, Chinese five spice and fragrant earth. Full, rich, plushly textured and oh-so-decadent, it reveals layer upon layer of spice box, black fruit and ferrous notions, finishing long and fragrant.

If a wine's aroma can be sexy, then this is it: Vibrant mixed spices, sweet, ripe plums, blackberries and violets. The wine has amazing density and richness with Petrus' signature layers of flavours including hint of game, anise and exotic Asian spices that go on and on. This is an intoxicating wine that will be a hedonists' delight in its youth or after decades of ageing.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
2009 Pétrus is deep ruby with purple tints at the rim of the glass. Spice, plums, blackberries, and blueberries, with cinnamon, clay, mint, mocha, and kirsch, make up the complex perfume. From a blend of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the wine is rich, concentrated and packed with surreal levels of glycerine. This viscous, thrilling treat provides a seamless, intensely pure finish of spice, jammy cherries, and chocolate.

This offers a beautiful balance between its two sides: dark fig, roasted plum and toast flavours versus racy raspberry, cassis and perfumy black tea notes. Silky overall, but with terrific latent grip and a mouthwatering minerality that drives through the finish, pulling out extra fruit paste and charred spice hints. Very, very impressive range. Best from 2018 through 2035.

Tasted blind. Mid bright crimson. Mild and well balanced without showiness. Very sweet. Thick, dense and rather essence-like. This should have a long life. Quite refreshing actually! Great savour on the end.

Of exquisite spice even at this early stage, with tannins as dense and firm as they are absolutely supple, delicacy and power perfectly balanced: magnificent, legendary, will only bring the greatest pleasure in the stage of its long life.

Petrus is one of the most iconic and most sought-after wines of the Pomerol appellation, occupying a unique place in the Bordeaux wine landscape. Unlike the grands crus classés of the Médoc, Pomerol has no official classification, yet Pétrus has established itself over time as the absolute reference of the appellation, recognised for the singularity of its terroir and the exceptional consistency of its wines.

The Petrus vineyard rests on a unique plateau of ferruginous clay soils, dominated by a high proportion of blue clay, rare in Bordeaux. This terroir gives the wines a dense structure, remarkable depth and an immediately recognisable identity. The grape variety used is almost exclusively Merlot, a variety that finds here an expression of rare intensity.

The international renown of Petrus was built during the 20th century, notably under the influence of key figures who shaped its style and reputation. The wines of Pétrus are distinguished by their richness, their silky texture and their exceptional ageing potential. Among the iconic vintages: 1961 wine, 1982 vintage, the mythical 1989, Petrus 1990, 2000, Petrus 2016, 2017 wine, regularly cited among the greatest wines of Bordeaux.
