PETRUS 1960

Grape variety/Blend: Merlot (~95%), Cabernet Franc (~5%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Ageing: 18 to 22 months in new barrels

Maturity: Old wine

Food and Wine Pairing: Red meats (beef, game), dark-fleshed poultry (duck, guinea fowl) or dishes in sauce. Matured pressed cooked cheeses (Comté, Gruyère, Emmental) and chocolate desserts also work wonderfully with the complexity of Petrus wines.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1960 Petrus was served blind. While it was clear that we were in the presence of a Pomerol of serious pedigree, I was shocked not so much by the revelation of its age since the colour betrayed that clearly enough, but by revelation of its undistinguished birth-year. It had a dark colour that suggested a warmer growing season. The bouquet is straightforward but defined, a hint of black plum soon nudged over for powdered dark chocolate, sage and glowing embers. The palate is medium-bodied, quite earthy, soft and easy-going, but with a sense of harmony and an abstract sense of "pride" on the finish. I doubt many 1960 Pomerol wines approach this Petrus, which to my mind would have been the last vintage under the legendary «Grande Dame de Pomerol», Mme. Loubat.

The Petrus estate takes its name from the locality "Petrus". Its history is recent, yet this wine is already a legend. Throughout the 19th century, the estate belonged to the Arnaud family. From 1925, a woman from Libourne, Madame Loubat, acquired shares in the property. About twenty years later, she became the sole owner. Not accepting or understanding why Médoc wines were selling for higher prices than those from Pomerol, particularly her own, she did everything to make the most of such promising terroir. In a few decades, the myth was born. In 1961, Madame Lacoste and Monsieur Lignac, niece and nephew of Madame Loubat, inherited the estate. The vineyard is situated on the highest hill of the appellation, reaching an altitude of 40 metres. The soil, composed mainly of clay, is well-suited to Merlot, which makes up 95% of the grape varieties. The 12 hectares of the estate are subject to constant work and permanent attention to detail. Pétrus is considered a wine that is more accessible for tasting than some of its illustrious counterparts.
