Good fruit, good grip, silk-clad tannins. Slightly sweaty tannin on the nose but sweet and rich.

Jeannie Cho Lee February - 2015

An elegant, supple, fully mature vintage for Montrose that will be appreciated by those who prefer the dried leaf, leather flavours in older wines. Just starting to fade, so I would drink this medium bodied, classic St-Estèphe red quickly. It is delicious to drink now.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
In the early days of this wine, I think this was one of my favourite and most highly recommended wines when I did my review of the 1976s, which was generally very critical of the vintage. The wine is fully mature and should hold for another 5-10 years, but it showed very well in the vertical at Château Montrose. The year 1976 started off with great promise. Early spring had a very hot April, May and June with no vineyard diseases, but an extreme drought in July, August and September caused vineyard stress. During harvest, rain caused some dilution in numerous vineyards. The harvest occurred between 15 and 29 September. This is a fully mature, very complex wine, with notes of cedarwood, new saddle leather, mulberries, and blackcurrants. The wine has some loamy soil notes and unsmoked cigar tobacco in a medium to full-bodied, very complex and fully mature style.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is one of the most emblematic estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it embodies the power, longevity and stylistic rigour characteristic of the great wines of the northern Médoc. Located at the southern tip of Saint-Estèphe, immediately bordering the Gironde, the estate benefits from a terroir of rare homogeneity, often compared to that of the greatest classified growths of neighbouring Pauillac.

The vineyard of Château Montrose extends over approximately 95 hectares in a single block, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This configuration gives the wines a profound structure, marked aromatic intensity and a remarkable ageing capacity. The Montrose style is distinguished by its balance between controlled power, freshness and tannic precision.

Among the most notable vintages are Château Montrose 1921, Château Montrose 1989, Château Montrose 1990, Château Montrose 1996, Château Montrose 2000, Château Montrose 2009, Château Montrose 2010, Château Montrose 2015, regularly praised for their concentration and ageing potential. The estate also produces a renowned second wine, La Dame de Montrose, made with the same quality requirements and offering a more accessible expression of the terroir.
