(Ed 1998) A surprisingly light, innocuous style of Montrose, the 1985 exhibits a medium ruby colour, followed by pleasant but washed-out aromas of sweet red currants, earth, and herbs. This medium-bodied wine displays some charm and sweet fruit on the attack, but it narrows out in the mid-palate and finish. There is also angular tannin and herbaceousness in the after-taste. Whilst it is an above average, good wine, in terms of Montrose, it is disappointing.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is one of the most iconic estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it embodies the power, longevity and stylistic rigour characteristic of the great wines of the northern Médoc. Located at the southern tip of Saint-Estèphe, immediately bordering the Gironde, the estate benefits from a terroir of rare homogeneity, often compared to that of the greatest neighbouring classified growths of Pauillac.

The vineyard of Château Montrose extends over approximately 95 hectares in a single block, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This composition gives the wines a deep structure, a pronounced aromatic intensity and a remarkable ageing potential. The style of Montrose is distinguished by its balance of controlled power, freshness and tannin precision.

Aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels, this grand vin requires many years of cellaring. The estate counts among its legends 1921, 1929, the 1982 vintage and 1990, while the 2009 wine and the 2010 vintage proudly represent its more recent period. La Dame de Montrose, the second selection born in 1983, offers a more tender interpretation of the same terroir. The estate also produces a recognised second wine, La Dame de Montrose, crafted to the same exacting standards and offering a more accessible expression of the terroir.
