Dark ruby garnet, delicate ochre rim, subtle lightening at the edge. Notes of tobacco and blackberries, delicate liquorice, mineral note, smoky note. Velvety and chocolatey, with little air, animal, black berry, ripe tannins, long-lasting, nougat touch also on the finish, simply wonderful, mineral and very convincing.

The wine is remarkably rich, with a distinctive nose of sweet, jammy fruit, liquefied minerals, new saddle leather, and grilled steak. It is a huge, corpulent, awesomely-endowed wine that is still relatively approachable, as it has not yet begun to shut down and lose its baby fat. A clean bottle! The issue with this wine is, will you open Jeckyl or Hyde? The worst bottles are filled with TCA. However, the best bottles and this was one of the best bottles are a thrill-a-sip experience. There is an incredible level of intensity that is packed with Asian spice, Cuban cigars, cedar chest, forest floor, currants, smoke, tobacco, and oceanic influences. Full-bodied, long, structured, and displaying the patina of age that has softened its once fierce tannins, replacing them with a regal textured, fruit and earth packed wine, the finish builds and expands for at least 60 seconds.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is one of the most iconic estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it embodies the power, longevity and stylistic rigour characteristic of the great wines of the northern Médoc. Located at the southern tip of Saint-Estèphe, immediately bordering the Gironde, the estate benefits from a terroir of rare homogeneity, often compared to that of the greatest neighbouring classified growths of Pauillac.

The vineyard of Château Montrose extends over approximately 95 hectares in a single block, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This composition gives the wines a deep structure, a pronounced aromatic intensity and a remarkable ageing potential. The style of Montrose is distinguished by its balance of controlled power, freshness and tannin precision.

Aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels, this grand vin requires many years of cellaring. The estate counts among its legends 1921, 1929, the 1982 vintage and 1990, while the 2009 wine and the 2010 vintage proudly represent its more recent period. La Dame de Montrose, the second selection born in 1983, offers a more tender interpretation of the same terroir. The estate also produces a recognised second wine, La Dame de Montrose, crafted to the same exacting standards and offering a more accessible expression of the terroir.
