It has the '86 fruit from Pauillac, a rather massive attack at first, but with balance so it does feel powerful but not heavy or clumsy; it's cassis, dark berries and still tannic.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1986 Haut-Batailley has matured in splendid fashion. The nose is engaging, a mixture of red and black fruit, gravel and spice. Juxtaposed against the 1996 Haut-Batailley I find more energy in this, despite being ten years older. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, earthy black fruit with good acidity. It is not a complex Pauillac and the finish feels a tad staid, although the residue of white pepper and bay leaf on the finish is very pleasurable. This 1986 is clearly à point and should be drunk now and over the next 8-10 years.

Elegant and tasty with cedar, plum and currant flavors of moderate depth an d intensity. Lacks the richness for greatness, but it's a very good drink.

Château Haut Batailley
Château Haut Batailley

Château Haut-Batailley is a Bordeaux wine estate of 22 hectares located in Pauillac in Gironde. It produces Fifth Classified Growths in the 1855 Médoc classification.

The estate was purchased by the Borie family, who also own Châteaux Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Ducru-Beaucaillou. Currently managed by François-Xavier Borie, the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in oak barrels, partially new (30 to 40% depending on the year). The second wine is called Château La Tour L'Aspic.
