Tom Cannavan January - 2004

This wine has another great nose: a note of gamy, animal character with a little bloody streak joins the ripe, juicy fruit and incense-like, cedary notes. The palate is not quite so full or voluptuous as the 1990, and the wine has more structure and a slightly more intellectual character with complex tannins and acids. Veronique said she could not make up her mind which of this pair she preferred, but although the 1989 is a classic claret - possibly the more classic of the pair - the extra opulence of the 1990 gets my vote. Still a great wine of course.

Gorgeous wine, so well crafted. Good dark-ruby color. Aromas of cherry, spice and cocoa. Full-bodied, firmly tannic and a long finish of fruit and tannins. Needs time to mellow

Filled with sweet, roasted fruit, tobacco, tar, wild strawberry and fennel scents. Medium bodied, this elegantly styled wine feels plush and silky in the mouth. Nice length and purity.

Very rich and thick. Bit like 2009. Bit loose. Very sweet. Some dried grape flavours.

Dark red colour. Medium to good intensity. Slight evolution, less than La Mission Haut Brion. Nose of medium intensity. Discreet. On swirling, fruity. Oaky. Quite oaky (Baron). The wood seizes the palate from the entry into the mouth and never leaves it, despite the return of the fruit. This ensemble remains somewhat rustic in the grain.

Château Haut Bailly
Château Haut Bailly

Château Haut-Bailly is a Bordeaux wine estate that produces Graves Grand Cru Classé wines in the Pessac-Léognan AOC.

Haut Bailly is one of the few estates in Graves to produce only red wine.

In 1998, the Sanders family sold the vineyard to an American banker, Bob Wilmers, but Véronique Sanders continues to manage it. Gentle, almost discreet tannins, a delicate balance, "without anything too much" as Jean Sanders likes to say, define the incomparable Haut Bailly style. There is nothing ostentatious about this wine that embodies Bordeaux finesse.
