Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A leap in terms of colour and fruit character in the vertical to date, plumper and more primary in appearance, focused cassis and bilberry, with cold ash and mint leaf. A cooler-than-average vintage, and one that highlights the judgement always displayed at this estate, balanced and utterly moreish, waiting to be dived into and shared with friends

Dark colour, of normal intensity. Fruity nose, fresh and slightly cool. Very fruity palate, smooth and flavourful, with taste, character and even body. It's good. Blend: 62% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 3% cabernet franc.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
An elegant, dark ruby/purple-tinged effort displaying notes of tobacco smoke intermixed with sweet currant, cherry, and some toast, this medium-bodied wine has the hallmark purity married graciously with nicely concentrated fruit. The tannins are sweet but present and give definition to this well-made Pessac-Leognan. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.

Falstaff January - 2023
Falstaff
Deep carmine-garnet red, violet reflections, subtle brightening at the rim towards ochre. Damp wool, nougat, ripe bouquet, orange peel. Decent blackberry compote, somewhat brittle tannins, dry; not oxidative, but no revelation either, medium length.

From an assemblage of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and a dollop of Cabernet Franc, this wine is filled with black cherry, cassis, oak, smoke, tar and cranberry. Medium bodied and showing some greenness from the cool style of the vintage, this Pessac Léognan wine will not improve much with age. I'd drink it over the next decade.

Dark core but slightly watery rim. Earthy, bracken notes on the nose. Light to medium-bodied with mid-palate sweetness but short of fruit and drying on the finish.

Château Haut Bailly
Château Haut Bailly

Château Haut-Bailly is a Bordeaux wine estate that produces Graves Grand Cru Classé wines in the Pessac-Léognan AOC.

Haut Bailly is one of the few estates in Graves to produce only red wine.

In 1998, the Sanders family sold the vineyard to an American banker, Bob Wilmers, but Véronique Sanders continues to manage it. Gentle, almost discreet tannins, a delicate balance, "without anything too much" as Jean Sanders likes to say, define the incomparable Haut Bailly style. There is nothing ostentatious about this wine that embodies Bordeaux finesse.
