Cabernet dominant in character, with a dark fruit emphasis, elegantly fading but still savoury and elegant, a wine where subtle nuances layer up and reveal a pillow of fine tannins, tobacco, cigar box, violet, peony and pulses of minerality that keep the palate buoyant. A wonderful vintage that has reigned over the 2000 for the first two decades but I would now suggest looking to the 2000 over the coming years. Harvest September 24 to October 11. Second year of Véronique Sanders as CEO, Denis Dubourdieu consultant. 50% new oak.

Strong crimson garnet, purple reflections, broader ochre rim brightening. Ripe plums, some tar and leather, black cherries, subtle animalistic nuances. Substantial, elegant, red cherries and liquorice, fresh acidity, mineral-taut, good length seems light on its feet, yet long and animating, salty finish, has certain ageing potential.

Château Haut Bailly

Château Haut-Bailly is a Bordeaux wine estate that produces Graves Grand Cru Classé wines in the Pessac-Léognan AOC.

Haut Bailly is one of the few estates in Graves to produce only red wine.

In 1998, the Sanders family sold the vineyard to an American banker, Bob Wilmers, but Véronique Sanders continues to manage it. Gentle, almost discreet tannins, a delicate balance, "without anything too much" as Jean Sanders likes to say, define the incomparable Haut Bailly style. There is nothing ostentatious about this wine that embodies Bordeaux finesse.
