Jancis Robinson December - 2001
Jancis Robinson
Wonderfully rich, decadent nose reminiscent of fermented pineapple. A wine you'd either love or loathe. (I love it.) It's a dangerous wine which almost topples over the edge into too much volatility. It could do with more acidity to make it perfect but is certainly dramatic.

Very concentrated with full bodied and sweet floral notes. Fuller bodied than the 1996 with hints of chrysanthemums and lovely depth and length. Fairly long finish and ready to enjoy now.

Notes of apricot jam and cocoa; shows extract and fullness, appears imposing, even powerful, which comes somewhat at the expense of freshness. Still clearly in the old, oily Sauternes style.

An elegant and racy Guiraud, with pretty aromas of pineapple, melon and spice. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with an intense, spicy botrytis finish. Needs time.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted as part of a vertical held at the château. The Guiraud 1997 is clearly a step up from the previous two vintages: bursting forth with delectable wild honey and marmalade aromas that mingle with vanilla pod and peach skin. It has retained good vigour and remains vital – much more so than the 1996. The palate is well-balanced and fresh on the entry with crisp acidity cutting through the Seville orange marmalade and quince fruit. There is good weight on the finish and though there is not the complexity of later vintages, it continues to drink well.

Château Guiraud
Château Guiraud

Château Guiraud is a 128-hectare wine estate located in Sauternes in the Gironde region. In the Sauternes AOC, it is classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. Château Guiraud produces an average of 100,000 bottles per year, although in some years due to weather conditions, the first growth is not sold.

The estate also produces a second wine, Le Dauphin de Guiraud, made from young vines and a selection made during blending, as well as a dry white wine called G de Château Guiraud. Only Semillon (65%) and Sauvignon (35%) grape varieties are grown at Guiraud, with spur pruning for Semillon and cane pruning for Sauvignon.

The Château Guiraud harvest is exclusively manual and carried out through successive pickings (2 to 6 pickings) of botrytized grapes. A minimum potential alcohol content of 20° is required to begin the harvest. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in new oak barrels, renewed by thirds, for a period ranging from three weeks to two months. The different batches are fermented until reaching their own balance according to their selection.
