Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Pale to medium brown-brick coloured, the 1961 Ducru-Beaucaillou springs from the glass with notes of kirsch, raspberry preserves and dried mulberries plus wafts of sandalwood, menthol, aniseed and dried roses with a hint of black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with layers of dried red and black berries and tonnes of spice and floral sparks with a wonderfully plush texture and fantastically long, multilayered finish. A great bottle like this one satisfies all the style and quality expectations of a 1961, and then some.

A superb 1961, endorsed by nearly 40 notes well spread over 22 years. Excellent from the start. Five stars through the 1980s. Reserve tasting of 61s in 1999, a ruddy, orange rimmed maturing; the most beautiful bouquet, copy-book classic, perfectly mature; sweet, cedary cigar box scent, mellow, understated.

Château Ducru Beaucaillou
Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most illustrious estates in the Saint-Julien appellation, classified as Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Located on the deep gravel soils overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to the "beautiful pebbles", these characteristic quartz stones that ensure perfect drainage and ideal thermal retention, essential conditions for the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Founded in the 18th century and acquired by the Borie family in 1941, the estate is now run by Bruno-Eugène Borie, who has profoundly strengthened the stylistic identity of this cru. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou has established itself as one of the most refined signatures of Saint-Julien, sought after for the precision of its aging, the exceptional quality of its fruit and the nobility of its tannins.

The vineyard sits on Günzian gravel ridges among the finest in the Médoc. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot, the blend produces wines of great depth, combining density, freshness and structure. The impeccably controlled aging in French oak barrels supports the structure without masking the expression of the terroir.

Vintages such as Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1982, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1995, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1996, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2005, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2003 or Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2014 illustrate the consistency and exceptional aging potential of the estate, now regarded as a major reference among the great collectible wines of Bordeaux.
