Create an alert

The 1977 vintage remains a chapter apart in the history of French wine. Marked by extreme climatic conditions, it gave rise to rare, sometimes fragile 1977 wines that bear witness to the expertise of winemakers in the face of adversity. Between spring frosts, a rainy summer and late harvests, the 1977 wines became authentic testimonies of a difficult yet historic vintage. In Bordeaux, the left bank of the Médoc came through with straight, classic reds, in the image of Château Lafite Rothschild 1977 in Pauillac and Château Montrose 1977 in Saint-Estèphe, while the right bank, more severely affected by frost, offers rarer and more fragile bottles. The F.A.Q

What were the weather conditions like for the 1977 vintage?

The 1977 vintage was marked by particularly difficult weather conditions. Severe spring frosts in March and April destroyed part of the buds. The summer, cold and rainy, slowed down maturity, whilst the harvest took place under unstable skies. In Sauternes, noble rot developed late, limiting yields. As a result, the red wines lack concentration, but some sweet and fortified wines have fared well.

Can a 1977 wine still be drunk?

Yes, but with discernment. Most 1977 red wines from France have now passed their peak. On the other hand, sweet wines and 1977 Vintage Port can still be enjoyed with undiminished pleasure, thanks to their sugar-acidity balance and remarkable longevity. The 1977 Sauternes, although rare, retain a beautiful sweetness when they come from estates such as Château d'Yquem 1977. Lovers of old wines will find in this year bottles of emotion, witnesses of an era.

The 1977 vintage: climatic context and characteristics of the 1977 wines

The 1977 vintage got off to a bad start. After an early budbreak in March, a frost wave devastated buds across French vineyards, particularly in Bordeaux. Further frosts in April, followed by a cold and rainy spring, hampered vine growth. The summer, far from saving the harvest, remained cool and humid, and only a brief warm spell in September was not enough to rescue the crop.

Result: the 1977 red wines often lack concentration and ripeness, with a marked acidity. The 1977 white wines are lively, taut, sometimes austere, while the 1977 sweet wines did not benefit from the conditions favourable to noble rot. However, certain terroirs — notably in Alsace and some Graves — managed to distinguish themselves through rigorous sorting and precise winemaking.

Bordeaux 1977 – When nature puts the 1977 grand crus to the test

In Bordeaux, the weather conditions put winemakers to a severe test. The March and April frosts destroyed a large proportion of the buds, while the rains of May and June disrupted flowering. September, though drier, was not enough to compensate for the delay in ripening.

The 1977 red wines are light, acidic, with vegetal notes and little structure. In the Médoc, only a few estates such as Château Latour 1977 or Château Léoville-Las Cases 1977 managed to achieve an acceptable balance. In Pomerol, the merlots, more susceptible to frost, yielded little volume, but Petrus 1977 and Trotanoy 1977 remain curiosities for enthusiasts.

In the Graves, Château Haut-Brion 1977 and La Mission Haut-Brion 1977 display a certain elegance thanks to their well-drained soils. As for the 1977 Sauternes, they suffered: botrytisation was late and incomplete, making the wines rare, fine but lacking their usual richness. Château d'Yquem 1977 retained only 30% of the harvest for its grand vin — a sign of drastic sorting and uncompromising standards.

Burgundy 1977 – Finesse in adversity

The 1977 vintage in Burgundy was demanding: a cold spring, a wet summer, but September sunshine that yielded sincere and delicate wines. The 1977 red Burgundies, notably from Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, stand out for their suppleness and aromas of ripe red fruits, though light in style. The 1977 white Burgundies, on the other hand, have aged better: Meursault 1977 and Puligny-Montrachet 1977 reveal a beautiful tension, notes of hazelnut and a fine minerality.

On the Côte de Nuits, Pierre Olivier in Morey-Saint-Denis offers a delicate interpretation of the year's pinot noir, while on the Côte de Beaune, Château de Pommard extends the supple and evolved style of the vintage. These wines are best enjoyed for their patina and tertiary aromas rather than their power.

Rhône Valley 1977 – A mixed vintage, with a few successes in the north

The Rhône Valley 1977 was no exception: the humid conditions produced weak and poorly expressive wines. The 1977 Côtes-du-Rhône are supple but light, while the 1977 Châteauneuf-du-Pape lack body. A few producers such as Guigal produced honest wines, particularly in the northern appellations (Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage), but without their usual power.
