Our opinion on the 1945 vintage: probably one of the best vintages of the century in Bordeaux. In Bordeaux, 1945 is considered as one of the jewels of the Bordeaux viticulture. Despite a reduced harvest due to difficult climatic conditions, the grapes that were harvested were of excellent quality. Indeed, the berries were very ripe and concentrated in sugar, which resulted in very rich, intense, extremely tannic wines with great aging potential. Most of the red wines of 1945 need about 50 years for the dry tannins to soften. The Bordeaux whites are firm, dry and well constituted but are still quite rare to obtain.

The Sauternes wines of the 1945 vintage are perfect, refined, firm, concentrated and long-lived. They are still delicious today.

The vintage was also excellent in Burgundy, with red and white wines of great quality, dry, firm, solid, of a beautiful color and well constituted. The wines have a long ageing potential and the best are still magnificent.

The Champagne of 1945 are very good wines, elegant and firm. Although they may seem a bit harsh at first, these wines have good bottle ageing capacity and can still be very enjoyable today.

The Rhone wines are superb, rich, powerful wines with good length and a complex bouquet. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Hermitage appellations are particularly successful.

  

Our advice for buying a 1945 wine

Among the best wines of this vintage we recommend Château Mouton Rothschild 1945 but also Château Cheval Blanc 1945, Château Latour 1945, Château Haut Brion 1945, La Mission Haut Brion 1945 and Château Talbot 1945.

The Sauternes are excellent. Refined, firm and concentrated wines. Good ageing potential, they are still perfect. Among the best successes, we particularly recommend: Château Filhot 1945, Château Suduiraut 1945, as well as Château d‘Yquem 1945.

In Champagne, the references are Pol Roger, Pommery and Roederer.

In the Rhone Valley, look for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Hermitage appellations which are particularly successful.
