Domaine Dirler-Cadé has chosen to link its four Alsace Grands Crus – Kitterlé, Saering, Spiegel and Kessler – to the four natural elements to symbolise their unique character. Kitterlé evokes Earth through its power and structure, Saering represents Water through its freshness and salinity, Spiegel embodies Air through its elegance and lightness, whilst Kessler expresses Fire through its intensity and solar warmth. This approach allows the expression of the diversity of Alsace terroirs and the estate's philosophy, centred on the harmony between nature and wine.
The estate produces mainly Alsace white wines from noble grape varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer or Muscat. These wines are distinguished by their aromatic purity, their balance between tension and richness, and their great ageing potential.
The wines of Domaine Dirler-Cadé have excellent ageing potential, thanks to the richness of their Alsace Grands Crus and the precision of their vinification. The dry Rieslings and Pinots Gris can be kept for 10 to 20 years, whilst the Gewurztraminers and Vendanges Tardives easily reach 25 to 30 years. Over time, they gain in complexity and reveal all the nobility of their terroir.
Domaine Dirler-Cadé, located in Bergholtz, south of Colmar, is one of the major references in Alsatian viticulture. This family estate combines tradition, rigour and respect for the terroir to produce Alsace wines of exemplary purity. Renowned for its work in biodynamics and for the precision of its Grands Crus, it perfectly embodies the balance between heritage and modernity.
The estate's history dates back to 1871, when Jean Dirler established the family house in Bergholtz. Five generations later, the merger with the Cadé family in 2000 gave birth to Domaine Dirler-Cadé as we know it today. As early as 1998, the estate made the bold choice to convert its entire vineyard to organic and biodynamic cultivation, thus becoming a pioneer in Alsace.
Under the impetus of Jean Dirler and his wife Ludivine Cadé, the estate has risen to become one of the greatest names in the region. The estate now works approximately 18 hectares, nearly half of which is classified as Grands Crus, an exceptional proportion in Alsace.
Committed for over 25 years to a sustainable approach, Domaine Dirler-Cadé cultivates the vines according to the principles of biodynamics: gentle ploughing, respect for lunar cycles, treatments based on natural preparations and preserved biodiversity. This demanding but nature-faithful method allows the singularity of each terroir to be fully expressed.
The estate focuses on low yields and manual harvesting to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Vinifications are carried out with minimal intervention, favouring natural fermentations and ageing on lees, which gives the wines texture and depth.
The vineyard extends over prestigious terroirs classified as Alsace Grands Crus: Kitterlé, Saering, Spiegel and Kessler. These steep slopes, facing south and protected by the Vosges, benefit from a dry and sunny microclimate conducive to the optimal ripeness of the grapes.
Each terroir is distinguished by a unique typicity:
Kitterlé, with its sandstone and volcanic soils, produces powerful and deep wines.
Saering, on marl and limestone, produces straight, saline and taut wines.
Spiegel, facing south-east, is distinguished by its finesse and airy balance.
Kessler, with its south-facing clay-sand soils, offers solar, generous and structured wines.
The estate has chosen to associate these four terroirs with the four natural elements – Earth, Water, Air and Fire – to symbolise the diversity and complementarity of their expressions.
The wines of Domaine Dirler-Cadé are distinguished by their aromatic purity, their balance between freshness and concentration and their mineral depth. Whether it is a Riesling, a Pinot Gris or a Gewurztraminer, each cuvée expresses with precision the identity of the terroir from which it comes.
The dry wines reveal beautiful tension and great elegance, whilst the richer cuvées, sometimes slightly off-dry, stand out for their volume and complexity. Thanks to precise and patient vinification, the estate's wines also possess a remarkable ageing capacity, allowing the aromas to develop over several decades.
The wines of Domaine Dirler-Cadé pair ideally with fine and balanced gastronomy. The dry and taut cuvées accompany noble fish, seafood or sushi wonderfully. The fuller wines, such as Pinot Gris Kessler, pair perfectly with foie gras, roast poultry or aged cheeses such as Comté and Munster. The more expressive cuvées, with aromas of spices and ripe fruits, also find their place with lightly spiced exotic dishes.
