Château d'Yquem alone holds the rank of Premier Cru Supérieur, a tier created for it in 1855 and never since granted to any other estate in the Sauternes appellation. Its vines occupy the high points of the Sauternais, where autumn mists bring on the noble rot that concentrates the grapes on the vine. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc are picked berry by berry, over the course of several passes through the same rows.

Every decade has left its benchmarks. The 1921 vintage stands as a pinnacle for the estate, while 1937 answers with a more linear expression. The late 1920s yielded a series of wines of uncommon consistency, and the bottles from the early part of the century now belong to the realm of collectors' pieces. The 1960s and the 1980 wine open a more accessible window onto aged Yquem, and the estate also produces a dry white, Y d'Yquem.

History and identity of Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem occupies a singular place in the history of Bordeaux's great wines. The origins of the estate date back to the 16th century, but it is in the 18th century that its identity takes shape, under the impetus of the Sauvage d'Yquem family, who laid the foundations of a demanding viticulture and a distinctive style. From that period onwards, the château's wines were recognised for their aromatic richness and their capacity for ageing.

The official 1855 classification definitively consecrates the singularity of the estate by awarding it the unique status of Premier Cru Supérieur, a distinction never granted to any other cru in Sauternes. This classification confirms the founding role of Château d'Yquem in the history and hierarchy of Bordeaux's sweet wines.

Long the property of the Lur Saluces family, who profoundly shaped the identity and quality standards of the estate, Château d'Yquem passed into the LVMH group in 1999. This transition was built on a logic of continuity, with the new owner choosing to preserve the technical autonomy of the château and its historically high standards.

Terroir and viticultural environment

The Château d'Yquem vineyard is located in the commune of Sauternes, on gravelly hillocks resting on clay-limestone subsoils. This geological diversity promotes effective natural drainage and contributes to the aromatic complexity of the wines. The local microclimate, born from the encounter between the cool mists of the Ciron and the warmth of the Garonne, creates ideal conditions for the progressive development of botrytis cinerea.

This natural phenomenon concentrates the sugars and aromas while preserving a structuring acidity, a key element in the balance and longevity of Château d'Yquem's wines.

Production philosophy and style of Château d'Yquem wines

The grape varieties consist predominantly of Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc. Vineyard management favours extremely low yields and constant monitoring of each parcel. Harvesting is carried out through successive tries, sometimes over several weeks, in order to collect only perfectly botrytised grapes.

The winemaking is conducted with great precision, followed by ageing in new barrels that accompanies the richness of the wine without masking its finesse. The style of Château d'Yquem is characterised by an unctuous texture, deep aromatic intensity and remarkable freshness, offering a rare balance between power and elegance.

Ageing potential and critical recognition of Château d'Yquem

In a constant pursuit of excellence, Château d'Yquem does not release its wine when the quality is not deemed sufficient, a unique policy that reinforces the stylistic consistency of the estate. Conversely, the great years have given rise to historically significant vintages, such as 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1997, 2001 and 2009.

The wines of Château d'Yquem possess an exceptional ageing capacity. In the finest vintages, they only fully reveal their complexity after one or two decades of cellaring. Kept in good conditions, they can evolve favourably for a century or more, developing exceptional aromatic depth while retaining freshness and structure.
