Wine Spectator November - 2005

An aristocrat. Big-boned and intense, yet with finesse and complex flavours of coconut, wholegrain bread, ginger, citrus and honey. Waves of flavour saturate the palate and the long finish picks up a mineral and smoke note. Very harmonious from start to finish.

Jancis Robinson October - 2021

Unusually broad and rich on the nose, with some floral notes, though much less opulent on the palate. The wine initially tasted as though it may be drying out a bit but it expanded in the glass to develop much more fruit. Though I think I would be drinking this vintage now if I owned it in quantity.

Full bodied, creamy, bubbly and offering a citrus and brioche filled nose. But the wine tastes and looks much older than its true age.

Tom Cannavan January - 2011

Light to medium gold/straw colour. Vinous nose with fine aromas reminiscent of ripe pear and pear skins, lovely little overripe melon and rotted orange notes add plenty of complexity and interest. The palate has an immediate fruit sweetness, running crisply through the fine, elegant mousse. There's a richness here that is almost peachy, with nectarine sweetness of fruit, but all tensioned by a nervosity of lemon zest and mineral acidity.

A full, rich wine, that brings together the Krug style with its vanilla flavours and power with the great 1990 vintage. After 14 years, this wine is developing still, hinting at toast along with flavours of peach, nuts and a touch of honey. It is intense, very much a food Champagne, but still retains freshness and the potential for further ageing.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
At its finest, the 1990 Vintage is superb, revealing a slightly oxidized style, but a full-bodied, rustic, rich personality with the body of a red wine, but loads of character. I cannot recommend the 1989 Vintage as three bottles tasted were all oxidized, possibly from bad storage, but who knows?

Krug

Champagne Krug is a Champagne house based in Reims for over 160 years. The Krug house was founded in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, originally from Mainz (under French rule - see: History of Mainz). It now belongs to the luxury group LVMH. It is run by Rémi Krug, representing the fifth generation, and by cellar master Éric Lebel.

Among the main techniques used is vinification in wood in small 205-liter barrels made from oak from the Argonne forest. With an average age of 35 years, the barrels are repaired by the house's coopers and reused from one year to the next. According to the cellar master: "The longevity of our champagnes is intimately linked to the time they spend in the barrels." Krug champagnes are only marketed when mature; in 2005, the 1990 vintage was delivered. For some champagnes, the house releases old vintages that have been preserved even longer, such as the 1981 vintage, which was disgorged and marketed in 2006 in less than 2,000 bottles under the name Krug Collection.
