Tasting this elixir, all I could think of was liquid silk gliding over my palate. Very rich, filled with plums, black and red fruits. The wine continued improving in the glass. A few more years will improve this wine, but, if anyone wanted to open it today, they will reap the rewards of a wonderful bottle of Pomerol.

While neither the 1989 or 1990 are as spectacular as L’Eglise-Clinet’s 1985, 1986, or 1995, they are fine examples of their respective vintages. The 1990, which continues to put on weight, is a richer, more complete wine than the 1989. The colour in an opaque rubypurple. The wine offers up less evolved, sweet, jammy, black-cherry, smoky, chocolate aromas, followed by a full-bodied, layered, expansively-flavoured wine with low acidity, plenty of sweet fruit, and more depth and length than the 1989. It is also more backward. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the next two decades.

Château L'Eglise Clinet
Château l'Eglise Clinet, like many Pomerol estates, owes its name to its proximity to the commune's church, which sits majestically amidst the vineyards. Despite its low media profile due to its very limited production, Château l'Eglise Clinet remains one of the very best in the Pomerol appellation, on par with Château l'Evangile or Château la Conseillante. Ideally located on the deep soils of the Pomerol plateau, the vines of Château l'Eglise Clinet are survivors of the great frost of 1956, which led to the uprooting of most vines in the appellation. This small Pomerol gem was operated by Pierre Lasserre, who also owned Clos René in Pomerol. In the early 1980s, the perfectionist Denis Durantou took over the 6 hectares of vines (averaging 45 years old). Château l'Eglise Clinet also produces a second wine called La Petite Eglise.
