Cellar Tracker March - 2024

The nose exuded a lot of tertiary aromas as cedar wood and tobacco were dominant, accompanied by a lovely scent of maraschino cherries and cassis. The palate still offered a good amount of fruit for the first hour, boasting red cherries and licorice in the upfront before a distinct black pepper note medlied with earthiness in the mid-palate. There was an air of energetic tension to the finish as tobacco exuded strength while a light mint note added freshness to a wine you wouldn't expect that from.

Concentrated and balanced, with ripe plum and cedar flavours over firm tannins.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Lots of smoke, truffle and tobacco going on here, but not much fruit. Medium bodied, with a red berry character, this requires drinking.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
(1-1998) This is a lovely Ducru that retains much of the silky, elegant personality of a top-class St.-Julien. However, it does not have the concentration and richness of the 1982, 1978, 1970, or 1961. Now fully mature, this medium-weight, firm, yet rich, savoury, and well-constituted 1976 has plenty of character and elegance.

Château Ducru Beaucaillou
Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most illustrious estates in the Saint-Julien appellation, classified as Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Located on the deep gravel soils overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to the "beautiful pebbles", these characteristic quartz stones that ensure perfect drainage and ideal thermal retention, essential conditions for the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Founded in the 18th century and acquired by the Borie family in 1941, the estate is now run by Bruno-Eugène Borie, who has profoundly strengthened the stylistic identity of this cru. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou has established itself as one of the most refined signatures of Saint-Julien, sought after for the precision of its aging, the exceptional quality of its fruit and the nobility of its tannins.

The vineyard sits on Günzian gravel ridges among the finest in the Médoc. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot, the blend produces wines of great depth, combining density, freshness and structure. The impeccably controlled aging in French oak barrels supports the structure without masking the expression of the terroir.

Vintages such as Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1982, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1995, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1996, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2005, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2003 or Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2014 illustrate the consistency and exceptional aging potential of the estate, now regarded as a major reference among the great collectible wines of Bordeaux.
