Smoky, rich blackcurrant fruit with loads of youth and ripeness on the palate. Impressively sprightly at close to twenty years old. Chalky tannic texture. Very dry and savoury on the finish with a touch of sourness that is discreet enough not to be distracting. (RH)

Tasted at the property. The 1998 is drinking beautifully at the moment. It has a lovely bouquet with subtle secondary aromas of clove, dark berries and cold granite all with great clarity and precision. The palate is medium-bodied, very well defined with precocious ripeness and yet it does not forsake that linearity that defined the style of this estate. Great tension and poise towards the finish, this is a consummate Graves that is amidst its plateau of maturity.

Even better with more age, this was so much fun to taste, it was impossible to put the glass down. Round, plush and rich, with layers of sweet, ripe, juicy, dark red fruits, earth, smoke, truffle, mocha, licorice and pipe tobacco, the wine tasted as good as it felt. Enjoyed from a magnum, so I imagine standard bottles are at peak.
