Mind blowing stuff, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is most likely the greatest wine ever from this estate. Still inky coloured, it has a powerful, slightly backward feel in its crushed rocks, cassis, kirsch, toasted spice, liquorice and dried flower-like aromas and flavours. Massively concentrated, thick, rich and textured, it delivers a serious lashing of tannin, yet nevertheless is perfectly balanced, ultra-pure, precise and long. It's the quintessential Clos des Papes and will have 30+ years of longevity. Note, yields were a miniscule 16 hectolitres per hectare, so there's not much of this out there.

Clos des Papes is one of the most iconic estates in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in the southern Rhône Valley. A historic property of the Avril family, it has embodied for several decades a demanding vision deeply rooted in the terroirs of the appellation. The estate has established itself as an essential reference through the consistency of its style, the precision of its viticultural choices and a comprehensive understanding of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils.

Now run by Paul-Vincent Avril, named Winemaker of the Year 2026 by La Revue des Vins de France, Clos des Papes exemplifies an approach based on the blending of terroirs and grape varieties, considered the very essence of the appellation. The estate produces a single cuvée, in both red and white, without segmentation, a rare choice that reinforces the consistency and identity of the wines.

The vineyard extends over approximately 35 hectares, predominantly planted with red varieties, with grape varieties dominated by Grenache, complemented by a significant proportion of Mourvèdre, as well as Syrah and other traditional varieties. Yields are deliberately kept low and selection in the vineyard is particularly rigorous.

The wines of Clos des Papes stand out for their depth, balance and great ageing potential, combining controlled power with natural elegance. Notable iconic vintages include Clos des Papes 1990, Clos des Papes 2001, Clos des Papes 2006, Clos des Papes 2007, Clos des Papes 2010, Clos des Papes 2011 and Clos des Papes 2016.
