Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The Chateau Climens 1929 must stand as one of the greatest Sauternes (or Barsac) wines of the century. Mature in colour, with burnished core and amber rim, the bouquet leaps out of the glass with scintillating delineation, bestowing intoxicating scents of mandarin, Japanese yuzu, dandelion, barley sugar, marmalade and rosewater (a trait displayed by the Lafaurie-Peyraguey 1929 just a few weeks previously.) The palate is underpinned by perfect acidity and a bewildering sense of intensity allied with finesse and mineralite. Traces of apricot, peach and honeycomb emerge, later joined by subtle secondary notes of candied orange peel and mandarin. "Can Sauternes be better than this?" I scribbled at the conclusion of my tasting note. The answer is "No."

Jean-Marc Quarin March - 1990
Jean-Marc Quarin
Mahogany, brown, dark, brilliant. Clean. Medium intensity. Fine. Nuances of candied fruits. Orange zest. Candied melon. Then coffee, chocolate, raisins and rhubarb jam. Toasted bread. Very complex. What freshness! The wine appears too fragile to dare swirl it. Clean attack, supple and ample. Development on a very broad structure, enormous and voluminous, fabulously balanced. Rich, candied, smoky flavours, dominated by the grape. Refined finish carried by a toasted note and a permanent fruitiness without any loss of richness. Wine full of finesse and harmony. Very intense retro-olfaction of smoke, currants, coffee and almond. A rare emotion!

Michael Broadbent March - 1983

Though not recently tasted, this is unquestionably one of the greatest vintages of one of the most consistently well made Sauternes. As I last noted, far more 'crème' and far less 'brûlée' than most old Sauternes. Perfection.

Château Climens
Château Climens is a 30-hectare wine estate located in Barsac, Gironde. In the Barsac AOC, it is classified as a Premier Grand Cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification. The 30-hectare continuous vineyard sits on red clay-sand soil over limestone. The grape variety is 100% Sémillon (one of the few single-variety vineyards in the region), with a density of 6,600 vines/ha and an average vine age of 35 years. Climens produces only sweet white wine. Climens' yields are particularly low, averaging 7 hl/ha, or even 4 hl/ha in difficult years, allowing for exceptional quality and concentration. The estate produces a second wine called Cyprès de Climens or Les Cyprès de Climens, in memory of a curious tradition: when boats paid their toll (right of passage) on the Ciron, they were given a blue cypress branch to prove payment. Outstanding vintages: 1971, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 2001, 2005. Overall, the wines produced at Climens are consistently high-flying and of high quality. This is due to the high-quality production standards demanded by Bérénice Lurton and her team.
